Recycling Old Christmas Tree Ornaments into New Refrigerator Magnets

Recycling Old Christmas Tree Ornaments into New Refrigerator Magnets

Recycling Old Christmas Tree Ornaments into Refrigerator MagnetsNow that Christmas is over I have been going through several boxes of old Christmas tree ornaments that we’ve had for years. When I say years…try decades! I haven’t used them for a long time and was going to throw them out. Instead…I decided to box some of them up to donate and others we’ll be recycling into new craft projects.

For this particular project I picked out 8 flat-backed Christmas ornaments and decided to turn them into new refrigerator magnets. This project is one that the kids help you with too!

Pick out ornaments that are fairly light-weight, on the smaller side and with a flat back. You’ll want to cut off the ornament hanger with wire cutters (if desired). While you’re at it…give them a good cleaning if needed. Let them dry.

At our local craft supply store we picked up a package of heavy duty, round-shaped magnets. They come 8 to a pack and only cost $3.50 per pack. You can select cheaper ones, but I wanted heavy-duty magnets so that they can tack up photographs, my grandchildren’s artwork, holiday greeting cards, etc. to the front of our refrigerator without sliding down.

You can use quick-drying, all-purpose craft glue, a hot glue gun or E6000 adhesive glue to add the magnet to the back side of the Christmas ornament. You’ll want to let them thoroughly dry before using them.

A fun little project to upcycle/recycle some of those holiday ornaments that you no longer use. Heck…you could even “gift them” to people next year if you choose to do so!

Kid’s Crafts: Wood Spoon Penguin Christmas Ornaments

Wood Sundae Ice Cream Spoons
Craft Paint: Black, White and Orange
Paint Brush, Water Dish, Paper Towels
Small Orange Pom-Poms
Quick-Drying Craft Glue
Clear Fishing Line
Scissors
Round Wood Toothpick

Base coat the wood sundae ice cream spoons with 1-2 coats of black acrylic craft paint. Let dry for 30 minutes. While the paint is drying cut a 5″ long piece of fishing line and tie it into a loop with a knotted end. Set aside.

Use white paint to make 2 ovals on your penguin, one to serve as his face and one to serve as his belly. Refer to photograph for placement. Let dry. Dip the end of your paint brush (non-bristle end) into black paint and dot on 2 eyes. Use your paint brush and orange paint to make the beak. Let dry. Dip the end of a toothpick into white paint and dot on the inner eyes. Let dry.

You can use these Penguin Christmas Ornaments to decorate your holiday packages, hang them off of swags and wreaths and of course, to decorate your Christmas tree!
