If you’ve ever worked with a piece of coal you already know that it can be messy to work with. That “black residue” gets all over the place. For this project we went out on a nature walk and collected rocks that had some straight edges and could resemble a piece of black coal once painted.

We base coated our rocks with 2 coats of black acrylic paint. You may have to use 3 coats to get the right coverage that you need. Let them thoroughly dry!!!

There is no pattern when it comes to painting your design and you can paint anything that you like onto your rock. Here’s our snowman who turned out adorable! We used acrylic craft paints for everything EXCEPT for the facial features. We used fine-tip paint markers so that we could get the fine detail that we wanted. Let them thoroughly dry.

Take your painted rocks outside and lay them down onto an old plastic drop cloth, plastic placemat or something similar to protect them. Spray 2 coats of clear acrylic spray sealer on each rock…allowing 30 minutes to pass between coats. We used a spray sealer with a glossy finish as it really helped to make our rock SHINY so that it looked like a piece of black coal. You can use matte finish if that’s what you prefer. Let them dry for several hours or until no longer tacky.

You can use these little hand-painted rocks to decorate your home, business office or give them away as gifts. They’re the perfect size to tuck into small nooks and crannies!

  1. I would love to have these in my garden. My daughter is really good at drawings islands, that would be cute in the yard. And a fun activity for all the rain we’ve had.

My Grandparents used coal to heat their house when I was a kid, and having played in it a few times, I’m glad this is faux coal, lol. These are really cute.
