Ripley’s Believe It or Not! A Century of Strange Book

These are the types of books that never stay on the shelves in your school or local library. Ripley’s books have been around for a very long time. As a matter of fact, Ripley started sharing his stories in 1918, hence the 100th anniversary. Originally a newspaper panel, the Believe It or Not feature proved popular and was adapted into a wide variety of formats, including radio, television, comic books, a chain of museums, and a book series. I remember having to wait months and months in order to check these books out of my school and local library. By the time it was my turn, the books were in pretty bad shape. That didn’t stop be from enjoying all of the weird and unique stories hidden inside. The best thing about these books…is being able to share these amazing stories with my step-son.

I cannot wait to gift my step-son with A Century of Strange! He absolutely LOVES Ripley’s Believe It or Not! I gave him a Ripley’s book at Christmas and he carried it in his book bag for at least two months. He loves to read. He’s the type of kid that gets caught reading chapter books in the middle of math class. As a previous teacher and librarian, reading is very important in our household. We read EVERY night before bed. Some nights my step-son isn’t in the mood for a chapter book. A Century of Strange! is the perfect substitute. They are real-life stories that we can share together or separately. For completing his first week of fourth grade, he will be the proud owner of Ripley’s newest title. I cannot wait to see the look on his face.

Ripley’s Believe It or Not! A Century of Strange Book

And speaking of school…it’s the perfect time to add this to your home library, for your child. It’s a title the whole family will enjoy. A Century of Strange! is broken into six sections:

• Believe It! – read about Blood Falls, Hairplay, the Mapparium, etc.
• World – read about the Windmill Park, Silvesterchlausen, the Stone Castle, etc.
• Animals – read about snake dens, beetle battles or conjoined bats
• Pop Culture – read about cream art, Jedi training, or the book temple
• People – read about the bicycle ballerina, blazing barber, or the girl with the visible heart
• Beyond Belief – read about the jet-powered truck, Hairculese, or Krampus

Its release date was August 7th, is available for sale on August 28th and retails for $28.95 US, $34.95 CDN. It’s available online at ripleys.com, Amazon and at your local bookstore like Barnes & Noble or Books-A-Million. If you are looking for a “just because” gift for your child, I would highly recommend Ripley’s Believe It or Not! A Century of Strange! You won’t be disappointed.

Last weekend I had the kids over and we sat down to build a few spaceships from the “Make Your Own Press-Out Spaceships” book from Dover Publications. The book has all of the instructions and pieces that you need to build 4 colorful and creative spaceships. The only item you need to supply is the glue.

Make Your Own Press-Out Spaceships Book

Book Synopsis: Kids can discover interplanetary marvels with these four imaginative spaceships, rendered in a colorful Pop Art style. Simple diagrams illustrate the vehicles’ easy assembly, and the fold-out pages are filled with punch-out nose cones, rocket boosters, and other parts. Playful illustrations accompany fun facts about our solar system, its exploration, and phenomena from comets to dark matter. Book remains intact after removing the models!

Make Your Own Press-Out Spaceships Book

What’s really cool about this book has some fun “space facts” sprinkled throughout the pages. For example: On April 12th, 1961, as his spacecraft completed an orbit of Earth, Yuri Gagarin became the first human being to see our planet from space.

This is a quality-made book! The spaceship pieces are printed on a medium-weight and firm paper…the pieces are not flimsy or thin. They will hold up to your children playing with them once constructed. The designs are creative and definitely colorful. The step-by-step assembly instructions are easy-to-follow and my 9 year old granddaughter and 10 year old godson had no problems assembly the spaceships on their own.
