Just Add Sun STEAM Kit for Kids from Griddly Games

Just Add Sun STEM Kit for Kids from Griddly GamesThe new normal for school children is distance learning. Thank goodness for technology. However, you can’t do everything through the computer. That’s where Griddly can help. The company is fielding bursts of inquiries from parents who have now increased their role as parent-teacher-facilitator for all school subjects, particularly any lab sciences and art.

I’m currently homeschooling my 4 1/2 year old and 10 year old. I’m always looking for new S.T.E.M. projects that we can do at home. The projects need to be easy, educational and fun to hold my children’s attention. Everything that we need to do the project needs to be within my home or easy for me to obtain. The S.T.E.A.M. kits from Griddly are perfect for homeschooling parents like me!

Kid's STEM Project - Ice Hands

Several weeks ago we featured the Just Add Egg Kit on the blog and invite you to check out our previous feature on that kit. We’re huge fans of the S.T.E.A.M. kits from Griddly Games and my children get really excited when a new one arrives.

With this solar science and art kit you can do the following experiments and activities: Balloon Blow, Experiment Dark vs. Light, Experiment Soda Pop + Candy, Experiment Vinegar + Baking Soda, Mystery Pop Balloon, Melting Ice, Using the Solar Oven, How to Build a Thermometer, Make a Sundial, Ice Hands Art Project, Melt Crayons into Wax Paper Sun Catchers,  and Melted Crayon Painting. These activities will help to inspire new ones that you come up with on your own.

Kid's STEM Project - Ice Hands

My children are two different ages. One is 4 1/2 and my daughter just turned 11 years old. These kits are perfect for families that have children of different ages. Some activities are great for my son’s age group while other’s are more appropriate for my daughter. Of course…there are activities that they can do together too.

One of the projects that they really enjoyed doing was the Ice Hands and Food Coloring activity. For this one you use the included pair of gloves (or your own rubber gloves), a shallow dish (you provide), a salt shaker (you provide) and food coloring (included in the kit). Kids will follow the easy instructions in the book to make their Ice Hands. They will then sprinkle salt on a few of the fingers to see how the salt changes the texture of the ice and how it melts it. They will put a few drops of food coloring on the other fingers and observe how the food coloring interacts with the ice. It was an easy and fun project to do!

Kid's Crafts - Solar Oven Melting Wax Crayons to Make Sun Catchers

Another project that my children really loved was the melting of wax crayons in the included solar oven to make sun catchers! Everything that you need to make them is included in the kit! We opted to make a patriotic colored sun catcher using the red, white and blue crayons. From start to finish this project took us less than 45 minutes to complete. You’ll be amazed at how hot that solar oven can get! Children will need adult supervision when it comes to using it so make sure you have oven mitts & pot holders on-hand.

Here’s a few tips from me to you: Some of these projects can be messy. Plan ahead. I used an old plastic picnic table cloth to cover up my table to protect it. We used disposable plastic bowls and lids. You can toss them or wash them when done. Kids should wear an old t-shirt or a craft apron when working on the projects to protect their clothing. Have some reusable rags and hand soap nearby for quick clean-ups.
