Cats Can Get Hot Spots Too!

Cats Can Get Hot Spots Too!

When pet owners think of Hot Spots they typically think that they’re only a problem for dogs. Well, that’s wrong! Cats can develop Hot Spots too! Two weeks ago our cat Romeo (almost 4 years old) developed small itchy spots all around his nose and

How to Sew an Easy Catnip Toy

Like most cats…Romeo enjoys playing with catnip toys. He will play with them for hours at a time until that toy loses it’s scent. He tosses them, chases them, and rolls them all over his body. He gets really excited when we give him a

Get Your Pets Spayed and Neutered

I love animals and I’m especially fond of cats. We’ve parented 4 cats over the course of 30 years and fostered dozens who got new homes. I’m  a cat lover and currently Mom to a 3 1/2 year old boy named Romeo. My husband and I adore him and treat him like royalty. Trust me, Romeo is spoiled (as he should be) and very well loved.

We rescued and adopted Romeo when he was 3 months old. I’ve blogged about our boy many times. Right after we adopted him we took him in for a full physical and to get neutered. Even though he’s an indoor cat it’s important that ALL cats are spayed and neutered. As a pet parent…it’s YOUR responsibility to see that it gets done.

There are low-cost, no cost, and full cost spay and neutering available across the USA. If you need help with this…contact your local agencies to see what they can do to help you. Cats that have been spayed or neutered live longer and have healthier lives than those who don’t get the procedure done.

With all of that said…it infuriates me when people get a cat or two and don’t take them in to get it done. Stating they’re indoor cats, I watch them closely, I can’t afford it, I can’t get off work, I don’t have the time and a gazillion other excuses that they come up. It’s your responsibility as a pet parent to GET IT DONE!!!

Last month a box of 9 kittens was turned over to our local rescue society. A couple in our neighborhood has a female indoor and outdoor cat…they’ve had her at least 2 years if not more. Anyway, they never got her spayed. We would see her out and about in the neighborhood when in heat looking to hook-up with a boyfriend. Well, it finally happened!

That mom cat gave birth to 11 kittens with 9 that survived after the first 3 weeks. These kittens were in terrible shape because that Mom cat was still going in/out whenever she pleased and wasn’t in the physical health condition that she needed to be in…to nurse and take care of 9 babies. The authorities finally got them to release all 9 kittens to a rescue group.

After a vet check-up it was found that all 9 have 2 different type’s of parasites, a bacteria infection and a virus. All of that was given to the babies by Mom who isn’t cared for properly. These kittens are now under medical vet care getting the treatment that they deserve. They will then go into foster care (the ones that pull-through and make) to get new loving homes.

The point of my entire post is this…it doesn’t matter if your cat (or pet) is indoor only, outdoor only, or both, it’s YOUR JOB to make sure they get spayed or neutered. There’s way too many cats and dogs running around and sitting in shelters that need good homes. Even if you have an indoor cat they can escape and get out. It ONLY takes 1 time to get pregnant! Furthermore, they will love longer and healthier lives once they’re fixed.

Cats Love Cardboard Boxes

Cats Love Cardboard Boxes

If you have a cat or a few of them…I’m sure you already know that they love napping in cardboard boxes, drawers and baskets. Our Romeo loves them all. They’re a safe place for him to catch a good nap. They like confined spaces which

Top 10 Cat Toxins You Need to Know

We love cats and have had at least one in our home since 1989. Being a cat owner means that you have the responsibility to take care of your furry friend to the best of your ability. That means feeding them, keeping a clean home

Baskets, Boxes, Bins, and Caves Favorite Hiding Places for Cats

Baskets, Boxes, Bins, and Caves Favorite Hiding Places for Cats

Baskets, Boxes, Bins, and Caves Favorite Hiding Places for CatsAll cat owners know that they love to hide. You’ll often find them hiding underneath the bed, in the back of a closet, or underneath your favorite sitting chair. Cats are some of the best hiders in the domestic animal world!

Our favorite feline Romeo is no exception! You’ll find him hiding in your standard places around the home and thensome. We often find him hanging out in wicker baskets, cardboard boxes, storage bins, underneath homemade blanket tents, in an open dresser drawer, etc. One of his favorite games is hide-n-seek, he’s the hider and we’re always the seekers!

Hiding is a natural instinct for cats. It helps them to feel safe and secure. They rotate their favorite hiding places. That’s why it’s important that all pet owners rotate things around their home to give their furry friends a new place to hang out. So, how can you quickly and easily do this?

Simple. You’ll want to invest a little bit of money into cardboard boxes, baskets, storage bins, and baby blankets. You can find a lot of those items at your local Dollar General Store, Dollar Tree, Target, and on Amazon. Heck, you can probably pick up a lot of that at local yard sales or from family and friends who are giving items away.

You’ll want to keep the items clean by regularly wiping them down with pet-safe cleaning products. This will help to remove the scent. They like “fresh, clean, and new” places to hide. Once the items are clean rotate them around your house every 7-10 days. We like to completely relocate items to a different room and swap things all around.

Use baby blankets or small throws to make blanket tents and caves. Leave a small opening so your furry best friend can go in and out safely. We will drape them over the back of furniture, across a chair, or tossed over the hamper turned on it’s side. You can turn cardboard boxes and storage bins on their side and drape the little blanket (a hand towel works well too) over the entrance to make a wonderful hiding place.

Our boy Romeo really enjoys that we take the extra effort around our home to give him safe places to hide and relax. It provides a form of enrichment for him by spicing up his day and giving him something to do. He will go from one place to the next checking them all out and leaving his scent behind.

Give your furry friends something easy to do that doesn’t cost a lot of money. It’s a natural instinct for them to hide and an important instinct for them to maintain. A happy cat is a healthy cat!
