If your room needs a bit of a facelift, a DIY makeover is a perfect way to spruce it up on a budget. Bookcases can be a great functional centerpiece, and there are many ways you can add some personality. Read through a few easy makeover ideas!
Modify the Glass
Whether you’re trying Ikea furniture hacks or repurposing an old shelf, modifying the glass doors can completely change the look. An easy option is to apply pre-made overlays or clings. They come in a variety of shapes and styles. Some even resemble stained glass. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, pick up a bottle of mod podge. Mod podge is an adhesive that drys clear and can attach tissue paper, lace, or fabric to the glass. For you DIY experts, you can look into glass etching cream and stencils.
Add a Background
Adding a background behind the shelves can add a pop. Depending on the style of your room, try painting the interior of your bookcase a bright, bold color or simply add depth with a neutral color. For a funkier look, consider a pattern. If you feel confident, you can freehand paint or stencil a design. Another technique is to apply wallpaper or scrapbooking paper.
Purchase Trim
You can add a little class to a plain bookcase with other Ikea hacks. Forgo the craft store and head to the home improvement store. You can find a large variety of crown molding and trim. Adding decorative molding around the top and a simpler board at the bottom is an absolute game-changer. As long as you paint or stain the trim to match, your bookcase will look right out of a high-end store.
