A Titanic Love Story: Ida and Isidor Straus – Book Review

A Titanic Love Story: Ida and Isidor Straus – Book Review

A Titanic Love Story Book ReviewToday we are doing a book review on the brand new hardcover book titled “A Titanic Love Story: Ida and Isidor Straus” by author June Hall McCash. This book is filled with forty pages of photographs and extensive notes and is based on the love story of Ida and Isidor Straus, both German Jewish immigrants who arrived as children in America in the early 1850’s. Isidor’s father, Lazarus, was an itinerant peddler in Georgia, but within one generation the family became the wealthy owners of Macy’s Department Store in New York.

This book follows the Strauses’ life from Talbotton, Georgia, where an anti-semitic incident caused them to move to nearby Columbus. The devastation of Columbus at the end of the Civil War brought the family to New York, where Isidor met and eventually married the young Ida Blun. Ida and Isidor balanced the demands of business, family, and service to others and carved out their individual roles in those domains.

A Titanic Love Story emphasizes their work together as a couple, focusing not only on Isidor’s important roles as a businessman, member of congress, and philanthropist, but also on Ida’s contributions as an intelligent partner, the soul of the household, and matriarch of the family, as well as a stalwart supporter of her husband and one who engaged in philanthropic and creative activities of her own.

The Strauses were wealthy Jews within their New York community, and as people committed to the welfare of their family, their city, their country, and those less fortunate than themselves, they dealt with their own grief, illness, and occasional brushes with anti-Semitism. Ironically, their final happy days in the south of France lead to their unexpected sailing on the Titanic. Both died as they had lived, with dignity, honor, loyalty to one another, and compassion for others. The public outpouring of grief at their deaths, even by today’s standards of over-the-top journalism, was remarkable.

The Book’s ISBN: 978-0-88146-277-7, Cover Price of $29.00.

This wonderful hardcover book has 268 pages with over 40 pages of photographs and extensive notes. The first chatper starts out with Coming to America and provides great insight on their very early years as children. The book has 10 full chapters with the last chapter being about their journey on the Titanic and their deaths. One of my favorite parts of the book is indeed all of the black & white photos of them back in the old days. I have always loved looking at period photographs so I was really impressed to see them included in this book.

The book flows really well and makes for a very easy read. I have always enjoyed reading “True” love stories and this one is exactly that. You can tell when you read this book that this couple totally were in love with one another and they died together. As a long-time married woman, I found their story to be truely inspirational. I think you would all enjoy reading this book and since receiving it…my mother is now reading it too!

Educational National Geographic Kids BooksToday I am reviewing more kid’s books for you from the great folks over at National Geographic Kids. I love their line of educational books for kids because they are always jam-packed full of information, facts and of course…beautiful photography.

I love reading and I have passed down my love for reading to my daughter, grand daughter, god son and my 2 nephews. I have been having a lot of fun sharing my new books with all of them. Today I am going to tell you a little bit about each book that we received.

The National Geographic Kids “Ultimate U.S. Road Trip Atlas” is a 128 page softcover book. This book is full of maps, games, activities & more for hours upon hours of backseat fun! If you are going on a road trip or vacation this summer, you need this book to help keep the kids occupied in the backseat! From Cinderella’s Castle & the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Florida to the sunny Sand Dunes & Giant Redwoods in California will make your next road trip journey an adventure to remember!

The National Geographic Kids “When Dinos Dawned, Mammals Got Munched, & Pterosaurs Took Flight” is a 44 page hardcover book. This book is a cartoon prehistory of life in the Triassic times and is by Hannah Bonner. My 8 year old nephew is really into dinosaurs and this book quickly became his!

The National Geographic Kids “Cherry Blossoms Say Spring” is a 16 page book by Jill Esbaum. It is from the brand new series of National Geographic’s Picture the Seasons books. This book is a very easy read and is great for elementary aged children to learn about the season called Spring. It has beautiful photography inside and all of the photos are related to the spring season.

The National Geographic Kids “True or False Animal Cards” is like a flash card set but it deals with animals. The front of each card has a color photograph of an animal and the backside of the card has various facts about that particular animal. The boxed card set comes with a little instructional booklet that has even more facts inside it along with some ideas on how you can use these cards in various style games. I think it’s a fabulous set for use at home, in school or pack it and take it with you on vacation this summer to help keep the kids busy.

Laugh out loud at more than 150 silly stories about stupid criminals and the ridiculous ways they gave themselves away! Also included inside the book are some wacky laws, strange food crimes, crazy disguises worn by bank robbers and more! My 10 year old and 12 year old nephews love this book and crack up everytime they read it!

The National Geographic Kids “National Parks Guide U.S.A.” is a 160 page softcover book that features the most amazing sights, scenes, and cool activities from coast to coast here in the good old U.S.A. You’ll discover the wonder & amazement of our country’s majestic national parks in this fun, informative, and adventure-filled new book!

All 6 of these National Geographic Kids books are fantastic! I love that they are educational, fun and have beautiful photography throughout each & every one of them. They are a “MUST HAVE” for any child’s book library.
