Although I’ve always been interested in homemade health and beauty aids, household products, and natural remedies, I’ve never delved too deeply into it, largely for fear of doing more harm than good. Thank goodness I’ve now got a wonderful new book to help me, The Simple Guide to Natural Health: From Apple Cider Tonics to Coconut Oil Body Balm, 150+ Home Remedies for Health and Healing by Melanie St. Ours.
* Complimentary Book Received for Review.
This book takes the reader through all the steps necessary to safely and effectively make and use all sorts of natural remedies and mixtures for self-care, starting with an in-depth discussion of natural remedies and when they are and are not appropriate. Equally helpful is the information on how and where to source the ingredients (including an extensive resources section) and storing your materials and finished remedies. The author’s clear explanations are basic enough for a beginner like me but technical enough to be of interest to readers who already have some knowledge of herbal medicine.

The Simple Guide to Natural Health covers an astonishing range, including cleaning solutions to use throughout the home, treatments and preventatives for all sorts of ailments, and recipes for probiotic and healing food. Whether you’re interested in trying a few simple remedies or immersing yourself in the world of herbal medicine, this book has what you need. Here’s a sampling:
• Tea Tree Toilet Bowl Cleanser
• Rosemary Hair Rinse
• Sage and Licorice Sore Throat Soother
• Sleepytime Potpourri
• Muscle-Loving Omega-3 Brownie Bites
• Lavender and Peppermint Headache Balm
• Soothing Oat and Calendula Bath
The entries are set up like recipes, with a list of ingredients followed by the directions. Each entry also has a heading detailing “Benefits and Uses” and “Avoid,” so you’ll know why you might want to make it as well as any potential reasons you might not want to. Also included is a sidebar labeled “Remedy Notes” with additional information about the mixture, such as suggestions for using it, properties of the ingredients, or just fun facts.

Many of these natural remedies rely heavily on essential oils, which might require a somewhat substantial initial investment. However, a lot of the mixtures use more affordable and easily accessible ingredients like apple cider vinegar, dried or fresh herbs, baking soda, garlic, and ginger. Again, something for everyone.
