Wine Country Table is the Perfect Gift Book

Wine Country Table is the Perfect Gift Book

Wine Country Table Book by Janet FletcherIf any book deserves to be part of the Holiday Gift Guide here at The Classy Chics, it’s Wine Country Table: With Recipes that Celebrate California’s Sustainable Harvest by Janet Fletcher in collaboration with Wine Institute (Rizzoli New York, April 2019)! This gorgeous book is way more than a cookbook; with its beautiful photographs and stories about California and the people who produce its bounty of crops and wine, Wine Country Table would be equally at home on the coffee table or the kitchen counter of any foodie or wine aficionado on your gift list.

* Complimentary book received for review. This book is featured in the TwoClassyChics 10th Holiday Gift Guide. Post may contain affiliate links.

Reading this lovely book, you’ll tour 23 of California’s farms and wineries, meeting the farmers and vintners and learning about their businesses and products. You’ll find that sustainability and love for the land are the guiding principles these dedicated people work and live by. You’ll also be entranced by the beauty of the region captured in photographs by Robert Holmes and Sara Remington, from a close-up of autumnal grape leaves dripping with morning dew, to a swarming hive of bees in a plum tree, to workers harvesting cut flowers in the desert hills, to a sweeping view of a Malibu vineyard with the Pacific in the background.

The photographs of Wine Country Table’s recipes will not only make your mouth water but will have you making a shopping list so you can get busy in the kitchen. The recipes all reflect Californians’ penchant for seasonal dishes using fresh, local ingredients. As you might expect, most recipes have a suggested wine pairing—California wines, of course.

Here’s a few of the 50 recipes in the book:

• Potato Focaccia with Olives and Rosemary
• Roasted Tomato Soup with Tortilla Crisps
• Shrimp, Artichoke, and Farro Salad
• Grass-Fed Burger with Avocado and Chipotle Mayonnaise
• Red Wine-Braised Duck Legs with Dried Plums
• Almond, Orange, and Olive Oil Cake
• Farmers’ Market Berries with Late-Harvest Wine Sabayon

You’ll notice that the stars of those recipes are products of California farms, orchards, and vineyards. It’s fascinating to read about the crops and the care that goes into growing, harvesting, processing, and ultimately eating them. For example, the Bartlett pears grown at Henderson Valley Farms on California’s North Coast are hand-picked in August, just before they ripen. “Experienced harvesters know to start at the top of the tree and work down, so the bag gets heavier as they descend. They don’t use knives; the pear, stem attached, releases readily when lifted.” Such detail really brings the process to life!

Personally, I find the sections describing individual fruits, vegetables, nuts, and other products to be particularly helpful, with information on the peak season, selection, and storage as well as helpful kitchen tips, interesting tidbits, and ideas for use. You can check out the Discover California Wines website too.

Yummy and Nutritionally Complete Drink Powder from Huel

Yummy and Nutritionally Complete Drink Powder from Huel

HUEL nutritionally complete drink powderSince I first tried Huel Ready-to-Drink recently (see my review here, I’ve also been enjoying another product from Huel, their nutritionally complete drink powder. Just put water in the Huel shaker jar, scoop in some Huel powder, shake well, and voila! You’ve got the nutritional equivalent of a full, well-rounded meal that you can take with you anywhere!

* Complimentary product received for review.

Actually, this amazing powder can be used in ways other than mixing with water for a meal replacement drink. For example, if you’ve got a craving for pancakes, you can add Huel powder to your regular pancake mix for the nutrition your body needs. There’s a recipe for Huel-enhanced pancakes in the helpful “Let’s Get Started” booklet that came along with my Huel powder, shaker, and scoop. It has recipes for cookies and smoothies, too. This booklet also includes examples for how to incorporate Huel into a meal plan for different purposes, including weight loss, weight gain, and maintaining weight. All of this very helpful information and much more is available at Huel’s website as well, where you’ll also find a community of “Hueligans” who, through the Hueler Forum, share their experiences with Huel and offer each other support and encouragement.

Huel powder comes in vanilla and chocolate flavors, which I received to review, as well as in berry and unflavored/unsweetened versions. For variation, they also have Flavor Boost packets in 8 different flavors (Mocha, Chai, Chocolate, Mint-Chocolate, Caramel, Apple Cinnamon, Banana, and Strawberry), which you can add to your Huel to change things up and keep it interesting. Of course, you can always provide your own additions, for example, blending Huel with fruits, instant coffee, or spices.

I found that both the chocolate and vanilla Huel powders make great smoothies when blended with a banana and/or some strawberries. A welcome side benefit of Huel, for me, is that it helps to keep me feeling full so I’m not tempted to snack on empty calories between meals.

HUEL nutritionally complete drink powder

All of Huel’s products are vegan and are made with ethically and sustainably sourced ingredients. The company describes Huel as “nutritionally complete, convenient, affordable food with minimal impact on animals and the environment. It provides you with all the carbohydrates, protein, fats, fiber and all 27 essential micronutrients your body needs to thrive.” The name “Huel” is a combination of “human” and “fuel,” which perfectly describes this innovative product.

Huel products are available at their website for a single purchase or, for more savings, through their subscription program. They also offer military and student discounts, so do take advantage of that if you qualify. Visit Huel on Facebook for all the latest news.
