How to Make and Freeze Blueberry Applesauce

We love applesauce, especially a fruit blended applesauce like this one with fresh blueberries added into the mix. Making your own is a super easy process and only takes a handful of ingredients. You’ll need fresh apples and 1 pint (basket) of fresh blueberries to make it. The apples and blueberries are cooked down in a slow cooker crockpot before hitting the stove-top.

How to Make and Freeze Blueberry Applesauce

12-16 fresh apples
1 basket fresh blueberries
2 tbsp. lemon juice (bottled or fresh)
1-2 cups granulated sugar
Water

Peel, core and dice the apples.  To make this process go quickly and easily I like to use my apple peeler, corer and slicer. It’s an all-in-one kitchen tool. Place them into the slow cooker with just enough water to cover them. Add in the fresh blueberries and lemon juice. Place the lid on top. Simmer on high for 3-4 hours or until all of the apples are mushy and cooked through.

Get out your blender. I like to use my Ninja blender. Use a slotted spoon to “fish out” all of the mushy apples and blueberries from the slow cooker placing them into the blender container. Add 1/4 cup of granulated sugar. Cover. Process until smooth. Pour into your stock pot. Repeat until all of the apples and blueberries have been blended smooth.

Simmer the blueberry applesauce on the stove-top over medium heat, stirring often. Do a taste-test to see if you need additional granulated sugar. We all have different taste buds…so adjust the granulated sugar as needed. Simmer on the stove-top for 30-45 minutes, stirring often. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.

Spoon into freezer safe containers leaving a 1″ headspace at the top. I like to freeze in 2 cup portions since we’re just a family of two. My daughter freezes her’s in 3 or 4 cup portions for a family of 4. Label and freeze. It will keep for up to 1 year if properly frozen. Thawn in the refrigerator overnight when you want to enjoy it.

I would love to have a small freezer to do stuff like this. Just have a refrig/freezer and not a lot of room.
