Tumbling Tower Blocks Christmas Refrigerator Magnets

Looking for a fun and easy craft project to make this holiday season that won’t cost you a lot of money? If so, you’ll want to make several of these cute Christmas refrigerator magnets! The majority of the supplies needed can be purchased from your local Dollar Tree store or picked up on Amazon. The project is easy enough that older children can make them too!

Tumbling Tower Blocks Christmas Refrigerator Magnets

For this project we upcycled our Christmas greeting cards that we received last year. You’ll cut out the designs you like to fit onto the wood block. A pencil and a ruler would be helpful when making this project. The directions below are “per magnet” that you make. I purchased commerical-grade, heavy-duty magnets from Amazon. You need to use HEAVY DUTY magnets to keep them firmly in place on your refrigerator door.

Paint Brushes, Water Dish, Paper Towels
Modge Podge (we used one with a glossy finish)
Commerical-Grade Magnets
Gorilla Glue

Use the Gorilla Glue (not hot glue which doesn’t work well) to adhere 3 blocks together to form a square. Let dry for 2 hours. Once dry, paint the 4 sides and back in a color to coordinate with your greeting card cut-out. In the example shown, we painted the sides and back in a dark puple color. Let dry.

Trace around the block using a pencil on the greeting card to get the exact size and shape that you need of the design you want to use. We liked this adorable little snowman. Cut it out with scissors. It should be an exact fit to put onto the front of the square block.

Coat the front of the block with a layer of Modge Podge. While it’s still wet…lay the cut-out design on top. Add another layer of Modge Podge on top to seal it down. (the first layer is used to glue it to the block and the second layer seals it down). Then use the Modge Podge to coat all sides and the back of the block. Let dry for 1-2 hours or until it’s clear and no longer tacky.

Flip the block over. Use Gorilla Glue to add 2-3 magnets on the back. You want to use really strong commerical-grade craft magnets. I purchased them from Amazon for a great price. Let dry until they’re firmly in place. You can place them on the front of the refrigerator, freezer, gym locker, school or work locker, file cabinet, etc.

Optional Ideas: You can spruce up the magnets by adding fun little accents and decorations like ribbon bows, twine, jute, mini buttons, rhinestones, faux gems, glitter, lace, mini pom-poms, beads, charms, etc. Go through your “scrap crafts box” to see what you have!
