Tips for Cleaning the Kitchen Sink

My kitchen sink is one thing in my home that is cleaned on a daily basis. I do it to keep germs and bacteria down…and to keep it looking nice. No one wants to walk into the kitchen and see a filthy sink! People clean their sinks different ways, using different products, and probably not as often that I clean mine. However, I’m going to tell you how I clean mine every day.

Tips for Cleaning the Kitchen Sink

Before you start make sure that everything is out of the sink! I have a double sink, so I use my sprayer to wet down both sinks and to rinse down any gunk laying inside it. I like to use a scouring powder like Comet or Ajax. Sprinkle that in while they’re damp, but not flooding wet. I let it sit for about 5 minutes.

Use a designated scouring pad, microfiber cloth, or sponge that is ONLY ever used to clean your sinks. You don’t want to be spreading food bourne bacteria onto other surfaces. Scrub down the sides and bottom with the scouring powder and then rinse using the sprayer.

Next…I get out a clean microfiber cleaning cloth and saturate it with water. I then add 2-3 drops of Dawn Liquid Dish Soap onto it. I wipe down the sides and bottom again. Dawn is the BEST liquid dish soap to remove grease and grime (in my honest opinion). Rinse with clean water. That’s it…you’re done!

Now…when needed I will give my stainless steel kitchen sinks a good polish to shine them up…probably once every 3-4 weeks. Because I clean them daily, I don’t have to shine them up very often. One of the perks of keeping a clean kitchen sink!

Additional Tips: Wash sponges after use in your dishwasher. If you’re using eco-friendly microfiber cloths toss them into your washing machine after each use. Don’t use them day after day without cleaning them first! If you like your sink “spot free” use a dry microfiber cloth to dry up the moisture and shine it up after cleaning it. Most spots are caused by natural air-drying of hard water.

I use the same cleansers you use, but often I shall use an alcohol wipe and wipe down the sink with that too.

Big fan of microfiber cloths they save me a lot of paper towel.

I have to say WOW that is a clean sink. I don’t do that at all 🙂 But I do it at least ever couple of weeks.
I am a tea drinker so I always fill my electric kettle. After filling my cup I pour the rest of the HOT water over any dishes (no dishwasher) in the drain basket. and over sponge or what ever I am using to wash the dishes. And the balance goes down the drain in case or grease or whatever.
