Hand-Crafted Ribbon Coastal Christmas Tree

This hand-crafted ribbon coastal theme Christmas tree was made in one afternoon using a lot of craft supplies that I picked up at my local Dollar Tree store. Below I’ll list the craft supplies and where I purchased them. If you don’t live nearby any of these stores…supplies can be purchased online at Amazon. I elected to do mine in a coastal beach theme…but you could do a country Christmas, cottage, farmhouse, rustic, shabby chic, or whatever theme you desire. Just change-up the color & print of the ribbons and use a different item to top off the tree.

Note: Dollar Tree sells styrofoam cones but they were in a solid green color. I was afraid the color would show through my white ribbon, so I elected to purchase white ones from Hobby Lobby. I believe the ribbon I used was 1/2″ in width.

You’ll need to cut the ribbon into appropriate lengths depending on the size of the cone so that the proportions are correct. I used a medium-sized cone (they had them in various heights). I cut the ribbon into 3″ lengths using scissors. You’ll need a pile of them in each color that you’re using.

Using the hot glue gun start at the bottom of the cone. Fold ribbon in half and use a dab of glue to tack the ends down. You may want to do this to 4-6 ribbons at a time. Then start hot gluing them around the base of the cone in an even row. You’ll repeat this process until the entire cone is covered. I alternated the colors at times just squeezing them in and over-lapping them so that the top of NO RIBBONS showed.

Once I got to the top of the cone I cut slightly smaller sized (length) ribbons and hot glued them to the top along with a dap of glue to tack them downward. I used my scissors to make a small hole in the top of the tree for the starfish.

I didn’t want an ordinary starfish on the top. I opted to paint on a thick layer of Modge Podge. While the Modge Podge was wet I sprinkled irridescent glitter on both sides of the starfish. I wanted it to sparkle like the white ribbon. Once it was dry…I added a little bit of hot glue into the hole I had made and stuck one leg of the starfish into the hole. I had to hold it into place for about 2 minutes for the hot glue to harden.

You can make these ribbon styrofoam trees using plaid, solid, glittered, printed, etc. type’s of ribbon to make them unique to your own decorating style. I made a second one using red & black plaid ribbon for my daughter who decorates in a country farmhouse style. Total cost of one tree was less than $10 because I purchased some of the supplies at Dollar Tree.
