How to Make and Freeze Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches

How to Make and Freeze Peanut Butter and Jelly SandwichesI have two grandchildren who enjoy eating Uncrustables Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches. They will take them to school in their lunch bags, enjoy them as an after-school or before bedtime snack. They’re also great to take along on road trips and picnics.

Uncrustables are frozen peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with the outer crust removed. They come in a variety of different flavors. When you’re ready to enjoy one you simply remove it from the freezer and thaw for 30 minutes before eating it. I admit, they’re pretty good!

With all of that said, they’re expensive!

A few months ago we started making our own and freezing them. What’s nice about doing it yourself is that you can add as much or as little peanut butter and jelly as you like. We like our sandwiches loaded with both…whereas the Uncrustables have a thin layer of each in their sandwiches. Plus, we prefer my homemade jam which is delicious!

To keep costs down (hey, I’m frugal) I go to the bakery outlet and buy bread for $1.00 per loaf. I use my homemade jam that I personally home can. I wait for a good sale on peanut butter and then stock-up on a few jars. I pick up my sandwich baggies from the Dollar Tree.

Line your baking sheets or counter-top with silicone non-stick baking sheets. Working with peanut butter and jam can be a sticky mess. Lay out your bread slices across your working surface. Spread a layer of peanut butter onto each slice. Then add the fruit jam or jelly. We like the fruit jam between two layers of peanut butter, so I add additional peanut butter onto the piece of topper bread. Assemble.

Use a knife to cut the crusts off of the sandwiches. Some people don’t mind having it on…but my grandchildren want it removed so that their sandwiches look like the Uncrustables that all of their friends are eating. Place each sandwich into a sandwich bag and wrap or zip close. Use a food safe marker to label them or freezer safe labels. I just use G for Grape, S for Strawberry, R for Raspberry, P for Peach, B for Blueberry, PA for Pineapple, etc.

Place all of your wrapped and prepared peanut butter and jam (jelly) sandwiches into a large gallon size freezer bag. Label it with contents and date. Freeze. They will keep for up to 6 months if properly prepared and frozen.

When you’re ready to enjoy one…just thaw at room temperature for 30-60 minutes or place in a child’s lunch bag for school. It will be thawed and ready to enjoy at lunch time.

These sandwiches are perfect for workplace lunches, school lunchers, after-school snacks, before bedtime snacks, picnics, road trips in the car, going camping, hiking, or spending a day at the beach. Power outage? No problem, great for a quick lunch or dinner when the power is out! By making them yourself you can control the ingredients and save money!
