How to Clean a Hammock

How to Clean a HammockSpring is finally here and it’s time to get things cleaned and freshened up for the spring and summer season. That means cleaning the outdoor furniture, cushions, pillows, and the hammock. We clean them twice a year, once at the beginning of the season and again at the end of the season. Things seem to get dusty and collect odors even in storage during the winter season.

You can buy a fabric cleaner or do something that my wife taught me. She likes to use a carpet and rug cleaner to get the hammock and furniture cushions clean. Even though it’s made for another purpose, it works well for this one too.

Bissell Advanced Formula Plus Allergen Cleansing

We like to use the Bissell Advanced Formula Plus Allergen Cleansing  to help remove pet and pollen allergens. We like the unscented formulation. My wife pours a capful of the product into a spray bottle and then fills it with water. We do the cleaning outside on a warm, sunny day. Use a garden hose to lightly spray down the hammock and cushions. Spray items with the solution and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. If needed, use a gentle sponge to losen up any stubborn stains. Spray down the items with the garden hose to rinse them clean.

For the hammock…it’s best to do your cleaning while it’s assembled. You can get into all of the nooks and crannies. The sunshine will help to air dry things on all sides. After we’ve cleaned the cushions and outdoor pillows she hangs them up on the clothesline to air dry.

How to Clean a Hammock

A lot of the cleaning products that you buy and use around your home can be used for other things. There’s no need to keep 15+ different products sitting in your cleaning closet. Narrow things down to 5-6 products that clean multiple surfaces. One thing I do recommend is that you toss out your sponges, brushes, and cleaning rags on a regular basis. They house germs and bacteria, no matter how often you wash them.

Some hammocks can be tossed into a washing machine and dryer. When I’ve done that in the past I’ve had issues with strings getting tangled, my washer being thrown off-balance, not getting all of the water out during the rinse & spin cycle and shrinage with wrinkling from the dryer. Hence, this is why we now clean the hammock as explained in this post.

That is a great idea. I like using cleaning supplies for more than one purpose. Thank you for the tip.

  3. Your wife is a wise woman! I am so going to try this cleaner on our outside chair cushions. We used to have a hammock now when we get another one I know how to clean it properly.
