Hand-Painted Seashell Vegetable Garden Markers

May 30, 2020 by Shelly

Hand-Painted Seashell Vegetable Garden MarkersEvery year we plant a backyard garden. We enjoy growing our own tomatoes, bell peppers, zucchini, peas, onions, broccoli, watermelon, cucumbers, lettuce and several other vegetables. We’re by no means EXPERTS when it comes to gardening and are always trying to improve our skills. This year we planted a little more than what we usually do.

We use garden markers to identify our new plants and every few years I need to make new ones. Once our plants take off and we can visually identify them I remove the makers, clean them up and store them away for next year. I don’t leave them out for the entire gardening season.

This year I got crafty and made new vegetable garden markers by hand-painting several of my larger clam seashells. Each one measures at least 4″ in width but you could certainly use smaller ones. This is a craft project that the kids can do too!

I base coated each seashell with two coats of acrylic craft paint and left them dry overnight. You can decorate your newly painted seashells with Sharpie Markers, Acrylic Paint Pens or with regular acrylic craft paint. You can keep it simple by just writing the name of the plant on each shell or get artistic by adding fancy designs along with the name. The choice is yours.

You’ll want to let them thoroughly dry for sever hours or overnight. Take them outside and spray them with two coats of clear acrylic spray sealer. I chose to use one with a glossy finish but you can use a matte finish if you like that better. I personally like the glossy shine which makes the paint colors really pop! Let them dry overnight.

You’re new hand-painted seashells are now ready to be place into your garden to help you identify your newly planted plants!

These are so darling and would make for a fun project. What a nice way to have something useful and get creative at the same time.

I really like this idea. They’re cuter than just ordinary markers. You could glue these onto a stake and use them like that in the garden or you could just lay them on the ground near the plants.

This is so cute. We are making marker for everything. We sorted books and marked section on the bookcase. They loved doing it and I got an organized bookcase.

This is a great way to mark your garden. In Colorado we can make them with painted rocks.

Now these markers are super clever and really a cute idea. They made me smile when I saw the picture. I haven’t been able to have a garden in so many years and there is nothing better in the summer than veggies from your own garden.
