Beautiful Granite Carving at Stone Mountain Theme Park

A few months ago we were passing through the Atlanta, Georgia area on our way to Florida for vacation. We had heard about Stone Mountain Theme Park (sits about 20 minutes outside of Atlanta) and decided to stop in for the day.

This park is a nature lover’s paradise and the majority of family-friendly activities are hosted outdoors. You can go on a 5 mile train ride, go boating, check out their on-site museum, play a round of miniature golf, take a skyride up to the top and back down from the mountain, play on rope bridges in the treetops and all sorts of other cool things!!!

Stone Mountain Theme Park near Atlanta, Georgia

My husband and I enjoy street art and both really enjoyed seeing the granite carving on the side of the mountain in the theme park. At the base of the mountain you’ll find some beautiful walkways, park benches, water fountains, etc. A great place to sit down and relax.

The Memorial Carving depicts three Confederate heroes of the Civil War: Confederate President Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee and Lt. General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. My photograph doesn’t do it any justice. It’s HUGE and quite stunning to see in person.

We only spent the day at the park as we were passing through, but trust me…if we’re ever back in the Atlanta area again…we’re going to stay for the weekend. There is so much to see and do there that you can’t do it all in just one day!!!

This is a beautiful carving and as a work of art it should not be touched.

I’m Southern, but I have mixed feelings about monuments to Confederate leaders. I don’t really like celebrating them in any way but I also think we can’t just wipe away our past. Maybe putting up a plaque of some kind explaining why past generations carved this and why we don’t really like the opinions they held but don’t want to ignore history might be a way to admire the effort and skill that went into an impressive monument without necessarily admiring the views of the people on the monument. It does sound like a beautiful park.

I first heard about this a few years ago when all that stuff was going on about tearing down monuments. This was they showed pictures of and said it should be broken off the mountain. I so glad it is still there and people are getting to enjoy the area.

  5. This is very beautiful. I can’t wait to visit this some day. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
