Mom’s Snickerdoodle Cookies Recipe

Tis the season for holiday baking and we’ve been busy in the kitchen for the past week! So far we’ve made 7 different type’s of Christmas cookies to help celebrate the season. We keep some for our family to enjoy…but we mostly give them away to neighbors, friends, the seniors and folks at the local veteran’s center. They always look forward to homemade cookies during this time of the year.

Today we’re sharing my mom’s recipe for homemade snickerdoodle cookies. These cookies freeze well if you want to bake them ahead of time. They’re delicious with your morning coffee or with a big mug of hot chocolate.

Mom’s Snickerdoodle Cookies Recipe

1/2 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 large egg
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt

Topping Ingredients:

1 Tbsp. granulated sugar
1 tsp. ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Use a non-stick baking sheet or line your baking sheet with a silicone baking mat.

In a large mixing bowl cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, vanilla extract and egg until creamy. I use an electric mixer and it only takes 10 seconds (if that).

In a large mixing bowl sift together the all-purpose flour, baking powder and salt.

In a small bowl mix together the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon. Set aside.

Gradually add the flour mixture into your first bowl with the wet ingredients, beating after each addition. Continue until its all combined together. Don’t over-mix. Cover bowl with a clean towel. Place into the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes. Remove.

I like to spray with hands with a little bit of non-stick baking spray. Use your hands to form cookie dough into balls. Roll balls into the granulated sugar and cinnamon mixture.

Place balls onto your prepare baking sheet 2″ apart. I like to slightly flatten my balls with my hands. Continue until your baking sheet is full.

Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 8 minutes or until lightly brown and center is done. Remove and place them on a wire rack to cool. Once cool place them in an airtight storage container.

This is a great recipe to try out this holiday season. I am baking so many cookies that my grown kids
    are complaining!.

  2. You’re so lucky to have family recipes like this one to help keep traditions alive from generation to generation! Your snickerdoodles look great, nice and thick. I’ve got a cookie scoop I use to make this sort of cookie so my hands don’t get all covered with dough, and it works out nicely (works for things like meatballs, too). Thanks for your recipe!

These are so good! One year my daughter made them filled with white chocolate. They were yummy!

  4. I like the simplicity of snickerdoodles and I find that they are ones that always turn out great. I am going to try your tip of using some non stick baking spray before forming them.

I really need to try this recipe. They sound so good and simple to make. They would be good for my cookie exchange.

  6. These are my favorite cookies, even more than chocolate chip ones. I like the cinnamon in them.
