Salsa Queen’s founder, Maharba Zapata, an uneducated immigrant and single mother began making salsa in her kitchen with her seven children as assistants and selling her products at farmers’ markets. Today, she has a 3,000 square-foot commercial kitchen, sells her delicious salsas in nearly 100 stores, and now online as well.

Today, Salsa Queen offers five salsa varieties: Gourmet Pico, Red Chili, Roasted Tomatillo, Creamy Jalapeño, and Queso Chipotle. No sugars or preservatives are added and they are also gluten-free. Products are made in small batches to ensure the highest artisan quality. We tried all of these salsas and they were all so tasty and unique. We made some homemade tortilla chips to enjoy with the Red Chili salsa (I say we, but my husband is the cook in the family), and we really loved the Creamy Jalapeño paired with raw veggies like carrots and sugar snap peas.

Each of the salsas is very unique. Here are my some thoughts on each one:

Gourmet Pico – this salsa is made with fresh tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic and just the right seasoning to make this the most popular product in the Salsa Queen line. I took this one to a Halloween party at work and paired it with homemade guacamole. It was a big hit.

Red Chili – this one is packed with a spicy, flavorful punch. If you like to turn up the heat, this one is for you. It’s a cooked salsa and many of the Salsa Queen customers love it with enchiladas and eggs. We made homemade tortilla chips (pictured) and enjoyed dipping our chips. We also made homemade chilaquiles with the Red Chili salsa on the bottom layer over the chips and the Roasted Tomatillo on the top over an egg. This way by far, my husband’s favorite way to enjoy it.

Roasted Tomatillo – a recent addition to the salsa line, it has already become one of the more popular options for customers. It’s a tangy salsa with a bit of a kick. This authentic salsa is great on just about anything–chicken, shrimp, pork, or even fish. It’s excellent on a fried egg as well!

Creamy Jalapeño – this is a tasty and unique salsa that is almost like a dip. It has a nice, smooth kick and can be used on chicken wings or with a veggie platter as I mentioned above.

Queso Chipotle – this is another amazing dip that you could use with pasta or on a burger. It has a great smoky chipotle flavor. We enjoyed making nachos with it and added refried beans and some shredded chicken to the dish.
