Kid’s Crafts: Wooden Spoon Snowman Ornaments

The holiday season is upon us and it’s time to get busy working on some Christmas crafts with the kids. Today’s project is an easy one and great to do with preschoolers and elementary-aged school children. These Wooden Spoon Snowman Ornaments can be made in one afternoon and you’ll only need a few basic craft supplies to make them.

Kid’s Crafts: Wooden Spoon Snowman Ornaments

Wood Sundae Ice Cream Spoons
Acrylic Craft Paint in White, Black and Orange
Paint Brush, Water Dish, Paper Towels
Round Wooden Toothpick
1/8″ to 1/4″ Satin Ribbon 5″ Long
Scissors
Clear Fishing Line 5″ Long
Quick-Drying Craft Glue
Old Newspaper Sheets

Cover your work surface with sheets of old newspaper. Kids can be messy when working with paints.

Have the kids base coat their wooden sundae ice cream spoons with 2 coats of white acrylic craft paint and let dry for 20-30 minutes. While the paint is drying they can tie their clear fishing line into a loop with a knotted end. This will be used as the ornaments hanging loop.

Dip the end of a paint brush (not the brush end) into black acrylic craft paint and dot on 2 black eyes. Use a paint brush to paint on a carrot-shaped nose. Dip the end of a round wooden toothpick into black acrylic craft paint and dot on 5 small circles to form the snowman’s mouth. Dip the toothpick into black paint again and dot on 3 small circles to serve as his buttons. Let dry for 30-45 minutes.

Tie the satin ribbon around his neck to serve as his scarf. Use scissors to trim the ends. Flip the wooden spoon over and use craft glue to add the fishing line hanging loop. Let dry for 30-45 minutes. That’s it, you’re done!

Notes: If you’re working with really young children you could have an adult base coat all of the wooden sundae spoons ahead of time. Then give the kids black and orange markers to add on the snowman’s facial features. They can then finish up by tying on his scarf and gluing on his hanging loop. If you want to add a black top hat, you could make one by cutting out a top hat shape from black craft foam and gluing it onto the top of his head. We were working with young children so we kept them simple. You could certainly “fancy” them up!

This is a great project for me to do with my grandchildren who are still too young to do many of your craft projects.

  2. Much easier for me to find these spoons than all the great shells you use for crafts. I’d certainly add the black top hat.

  3. This would be a nice an easy one. I could see this being done and having a mini tree all their own. Wouldnt this be sweet for a small gift from a child? I love getting things like this and having the kid signing and dating them! I am a sucker fr kids crafts and love homemade ornaments.
