Over the past 2 years we’ve been painting on seashells and making different designs for the holidays throughout the year. We like to display our painted seashells out on the front porch, the back deck, in our flower beds, lining the sidewalk and/or steps, etc. We coat all of our painted designs with a spray sealer which makes them perfect for indoor & outdoor decorating.

Today’s craft project was made with a group of kids in my family ages 9 to 12 years of age. I’m sure some younger children could make them as these designs are really easy to do. We used large clam seashells that measure a minimum of 5″ wide. The larger, the better. If you don’t have access to seashells, you can certainly use smooth river rocks too!
If you enjoy painting on seashells or crafting with seashells…you’ll find over 70+ seashell craft projects right here on the Two Classy Chics blog! We will be sharing more seashell craft projects in the future too!
Halloween Painted Ghost Seashell
Large Clam Seashell
Black, White and Orange Acrylic Craft Paint
Paint Brush, Water Dish, Paper Towels
Old Newspaper
Mod Podge Clear Spray Sealer, Glossy Finish
Lay newspaper down onto your work surface. The kids will want to base coat the outside of their clam shells with 2 coats of black acrylic craft paint and let dry. Using white acrylic craft paint they need to free-hand a ghost shape onto their seashell. It can be a cute one or a spooky one. Let dry. Dip the end of their paint brush into black paint and dot on 2 eyes and an odd-shaped mouth. Clean the end of the paint brush and then dip into orange craft paint and dot on orange dots around the perimeter of their seashell. Let seashell dry for 2-3 hours or until no longer tacky.
Take seashells outside and place them on old newspaper or an old plastic placemat. Spray the shells with 2 coats of Mod Podge Clear Spray Sealer and let dry. I like to let them dry for 4-6 hours. They’re done!
Halloween Painted Black Crow Seashell
Large Clam Shell
Black, White and Orange Acrylic Craft Paint
Paint Brush, Water Dish, Paper Towels
Old Newspaper
Mod Podge Clear Spray Sealer, Glossy Finish
Lay newspaper down onto your work surface. Have the kids base coat the outside of their clam seashell with 2 coats of black acrylic craft paint. Let dry. Using white paint add on 2 large circles for the eyes. Using orange paint make a triangular shape to serve as the bird’s beak and let dry. Using the end of their paint brush dot on 2 black inner-eyes on top of their white eyes. They can do the same thing with black paint to add 2 dots to the bird’s beak. Let dry. Dip end of the paint brush into white paint and dot on the inner eye. Let dry for 1-2 hours or until paint is no longer tacky.
Take seashells outside and place them on old newspaper or an old plastic placemat. Spray the shells with 2 coats of Mod Podge Clear Spray Sealer and let dry. I like to let them dry for 4-6 hours. They’re done!
Your seashell can be displayed inside or outside once they’ve been sprayed with 1-2 coats of the Mod Podge Spray Sealer. I highly recommend that you use that product to protect your painted designs from chipping, cracking or fading.

My favorite is the Ghost seashell. You have provided me with so many ideas for interesting designs. I just havea to collect enough seashells.
These would be perfect in our garden. Our daughter loves collecting sea shells and she loves painting so it’s a win win over here. Another thing she loves is Halloween decorations so she’ll be excited for all these templates and ideas.
I just picked up some seashells at the beach last week so now its time to clean them off and make some Halloween decorations. The ghost and crow would both be fun to make.
If you like them…I believe on Saturday we’ll be posting my black spider seashell project. It turned out super cool.
The black crow is my favorite. That’s super cute. I like these for Halloween.
Love the ghost! My granddaughter would enjoy making these
I love the Ghost Seashell! What on earth are we going to do when you run out of seashell painting ideas? I continue to enjoy seeing what new and exciting designs you are going to come up with.
I’ve been down at the beach house for the past week collecting seashells. Some are for my massive seashell collection but all of the gigantic clam shells will be used for crafting. So far, 8 large bags of seashells to drag home!
