DIY Perler Melty Bead Beverage Coasters for Dad on Father’s Day

DIY Melty Bead Beverage Coasters for Dad on Father's DayLooking for a fun kid’s craft project for Father’s Day gift-making? I think you’re going to enjoy this one! Kids can make Dad his own beverage coaster for Father’s Day by melting beads into fun shapes and turning them into beverage coasters! This kid’s craft project requires adult help!

You can buy a kit from Yoobi Super Melty Bead Kit that we featured on the blog a few months ago. It has everything you need to get started. That kit has special beads inside it that are melted by using a hot iron. The kit includes beads, templates, the peg board, instructions, etc. If you can’t find the kit, you can buy all of the supplies that you need separately at your local craft store. They’re typically found in the children’s craft section and one of the biggest maker’s is Perler.

DIY Melty Bead Beverage Coaster - Michigan Wolverines

My son-in-law is a HUGE Michigan Wolverine’s fan and decorates his man cave in that theme. We decided to make a Michigan Wolverines beverage coaster for him for Father’s Day. We printed out from the internet the Michigan M from a website and then shrunk it down to fit on the square shaped peg board. The size that we made is 5″ by 5″ square. You can purchase square and/or round peg boards at the craft store.

Kids can basically use any color and make any type of design & pattern that they like. Just hand them a few packages of the melty plastic beads along with a peg board and let them get creative!

Once the design is done…you’ll need a sheet of parchment paper or use the iron protector sheet in the Yoobi kit if you’ve purchased it. Heat up the iron using a medium to high heat. Place the parchment paper over the top of your beaded design and gently sit the iron on top, using some light pressure. Our beads were perfectly melted and bonded together within 15-20 seconds, so it doesn’t take long.

Pull the parchment paper off and let the melty bead coaster cool down to room temperature. You’ll want to cut a piece of craft felt that is slightly smaller than the coaster’s size. Use clear quick-drying craft glue to adhere the felt to the bottom of the coaster. This will catch the “sweat” and “drips” from Dad’s drink while it’s sitting on his brand new beverage coaster!

You can buy kits by various different manufacturers that include just about everything you need to get started or you can buy the individual supplies and/or refill kits. You can find everything in your local general craft supply store or pick up the items that you need online from Amazon for a great price!

I would love to have my granddaughter do this for her Dad and Granddad as a Fathers Day gift. I’ll have to check out what is available at our local craft store.

We have used these beads before and they are super easy to work with. For an older child or one who can follow patterns this is ideal. I think this would be great for Dads or anyone really. For Dads, even younger kids can do something freestyle. I think the little mistakes are what makes things kids make special. I always date thing like this and remember when!
