If you are looking for an effective way to add years to your pet’s life these suggestions will go a long way to helping you realize that goal. While extending the life of your pet is the goal you also want to make sure the quality of life is great otherwise your pet would be suffering needlessly. These tips are in no specific order but if you implement all of them your pet will be healthy and happy for many years to come.

Have Your Pet Spayed or Neutered

When your dog goes into heat their body experiences a tremendous amount of stress and if not spayed some research has indicated it increases the risk of developing health complications. When a male becomes sexually mature they are also at a greater risk of developing health complications. Bob Barker from the Game Show “The Price is Right” said it best when he said “have your pet spayed or neutered”, the health benefits alone are worth the investment.

Don’t Feed Your Pet Table Scraps

In the past most pets were fed table scraps and while the food we eat is good for us it is not nutritionally balanced for our pets. There is a tremendous amount of high quality pet food available that will meet all of the nutritional needs of your pet without putting them at increased risk of developing Diabetes and other forms of heart disease. Once you have identified a specific type of food to give your dog it would be wise to stick with it, sudden changes in your pets diet could lead to digestive problems.

Getting Enough Exercise

The majority of people lead sedentary lifestyles and their pets also suffer from this trend. Your pet needs to be active in order to remain healthy. It is also a primary reason why you got the dog in the first place, to spend time together. By ensuring your dog is getting enough exercise on a regular basis you are reducing the risk of your dog becoming overweight plus it has positive psychological benefits. Try to take your dog out with other dogs so it can socialize. Dogs are social creatures and giving them the ability to interact with other dogs will really help your dog become emotionally stable.

Providing Your Dog with High Quality Toys

Your dog will need toys to play with and you should consider getting a high quality tough dog toy that your dog will be able to play with for years to come. These toys are also great for dental health; the constant chewing will keep the teeth white and strong for many years to come.

By incorporating these simple tips into your daily routine you should be able to add years to the life of your pet which will make both you and the pet happy over the long term.

These are all good tips. When I had a dog we made sure it had a lot of exercise. The one tip we did not follow much was to socialize with other dogs. Now that is much easier because of doggie parks, etc.
