The Kraken’s Rules for Making Friends – Children’s Book Review

The Kraken’s Rules for Making Friends - Children's BookPoor Kraken is the most misunderstood creature beneath the waves. True, he might have a temper, and his talent for meeting new fish is…not so seaworthy. But all he wants is a friend! Maybe another of the ocean’s most fearsome fish could help? Kraken finds hope when the popular Great White Shark offers up some of his “rules for making friends”, but will they help the scariest monster of the deep catch a new chum of his own?

What started out as a childhood passion for reading, has developed into storytelling and illustrations. Author of Kraken’s Rules for Making Friends, Brittany R. Jacobs, is a self-taught artist, with a background in children’s programming. Jacobs was bit by the travel bug as an eight year-old while visiting her Peace Corps aunt in Antigua, and has been globetrotting ever since. She is influenced by the people she meets and the lands she explores.

In addition to writing and illustrating books, Jacobs also writes and implements educational curriculum for informal education settings (i.e. museums, libraries, zoos, etc.). If she’s not teaching a group of kids, or making books, you can find her out on the trails with her two pups, Brix and Ollie. With Christmas just around the corner, this book will be the perfect addition to your little one’s library. Is your child getting ready to start preschool or Kindergarten? The Great White Shark’s six rules for making friends is spot on, making this a great book to introduce the importance of being a good friend. With vibrant colors and movement throughout each page, Jacobs’ illustrations will help to keep your child engaged during the story.

I, myself, am looking forward to reading this to my four-year-old nephew. Not only does he LOVE reading books, but he, and many others, can benefit from the importance of making friends and being a good friend. So if you’re an educator, librarian, or parent or relative of young children, then I highly recommend you add this title to your growing book collection. You and your child will have fun reading and rereading this story over and over again.
