Rainbow Out Over the Atlantic Ocean

Rainbow Over Ocean in WildwoodBack in June we spent a wonderful 2 weeks down at the Jersey Shore, North Wildwood to be exact. We are very fortunate that we have the opportunity to visit the beach several times every year.

Late one afternoon back in June a nasty thunderstorm came through. This storm had some serious thunder, lightning and hail along with it. I bet in one hour we had gotten about 2″ of rain and some of the coastal streets had started to flood.

After the storm was over, we headed up onto the North Wildwood Seawall to take a look at the aftermath of the storm. Within minutes, this gorgeous rainbow appeared out over the Atlantic Ocean and that rainbow lasted for at least 20 minutes in duration! I’ve never seen one that lasted that long!

This all occurred about 1 hour before sunset and it was pretty dusky outside, so that was the best photo that I could get. What was really cool was how calm the ocean water was after that storm had blown through. Earlier that day we had some high waves & riptides going through the area and after the storm…baby waves as you can see in my photo.

I love looking at rainbows and I’ve probably have photographed at least 15 or so in the past 20 years. I try to document them with a photo, time, date and location whenever I can.

Do any of you enjoy looking at rainbows? Are you a rainbow hunter? How many times have you seen one in your lifetime?

How beautiful. I haven’t seen a rainbow in quite a while. Its been such a dry summer.

  2. I have rainbow and cloud paper and a gel rainbow scene I display on my mirror so I can see one every day! I haven’t seen too many rainbows in person but love it when I do.

  3. It always makes me happy to see a rainbow. There have been a few times when I have been fortunate enough to see a double rainbow and that was extra special. Nice photo with the ocean so calm.

  4. How lovely! Rainbows are so special, it’s always a treat to see one. Getting a good photo isn’t easy–you did well, especially considering the less-than-ideal conditions.

  5. Rainbows are always kind of magical things… happening when you least expect them sometimes. It always takes me back to the looking for the pot of gold and wondering where the rainbows end. I like the double rainbows , we see them here pretty often with one very bright and distinct and another there but slightly hazy.
I have never seen one over the ocean, it is very pretty.

Even though it was dusky outdoors, this is still a beautiful photo of a rainbow. I have never seen a rainbow that lasted 20 minutes. I enjoy rainbows , but I don’t chase them.

That’s a great photo! I rarely see rainbows, but a few months ago I looked up from my chair here in the living room & there was a rainbow over our neighbor’s house! It had been raining while the sun was out, which for some reason brings out rainbows.

  8. I so love seeing a rainbow they are so beautiful and my heart always gets excited when I see one. I really feel like I am seeing a special miracle. Thank you for posting this picture. I really need to keep my camera on me so the next time I see a rainbow I can take a picture.
