When it comes to health and wellness, we all know that exercise and diet together is the way to a healthy body and mind. But when it is blistering hot out, I know that exercising is the last thing I want to do. But falling off track is not an option either so the only option is modifying your routine. Here are some tips you can use to exercise safely in the summer heat.
Tips for Exercising in the Summer Heat
* Mornings and Evenings Are Your Friend – Try and exercise early in the day or later at night to beat the heat of the day. Excessive heat can make you ill!
* Protect Your Skin – Even though you may be outside in the early morning or evening, find a natural mineral sunscreen that will help protect your skin. Don’t forget about bugs too! Perspiration can increase your bug attraction!
* Dress for the Weather – Look for pieces that will wick away moisture and are comfortable enough to not chafe when perspiring. Including a hat and even a cooling neck wrap or towel will help your comfort level.
* Wear Broken in Comfortable Shoes – I find that I tend to get more blisters when my shoes fit improperly and my feet perspire more. Make sure to break in your shoes before working out in hot weather so you know they will not chafe or rub.
* Stay Hydrated – This almost goes without saying but make sure to drink several glasses of water before exercising and carry a large bottle with you while exercising. The heat will dehydrate you quickly before you even realize it. Here are some additional tips on hydration
* Warm Up and Cool Down – Take the time to do some light stretching before and after working out. Even if you do not feel you need to warm up, your tendons and muscles are tight and a warm up and cool down does help.
* Know Your Limits – It does not take much to get overheated. Listen to your body and if you start to feel sick or stop sweating, you are overheating. Stop exercising and get to a cool place and drink plenty of fluids. Here are some Summer Safety Tips that will help you identify the signs along with some other tips for summer safety.
Exercising in the summer can be safe as long as you are prepared and follow some safety tips. Hope these help you stay motivated through the hottest part of the year. Share your tips you may use.

Good point on remembering bugs. I use sunscreen but don’t always think about bug protection, and they find their way in especially with sweat. I also like to tell someone when and where. Often we think we know are limits but the heat quickly zaps us. My mom had a heat stroke a few years back, and it made us all more aware.
these are all good ideas – I have wondered about people running in 100 degree plus weather – they look miserable.
Great tips and I really like the one about wearing broken in shoes boy that is so true thanks for sharing.
Unfortunately, I take a medication that actually cautions: don’t get over heated. I ignored it once, figuring ‘what could happen?’ Well, it made me so sick, I was retching, lol. Since then, I don’t do too much outside in the Summer heat! Indoor, in the AC, suits me!
I find that I have to get going with a workout before 7 am these days or the heat just gets to me. I much prefer exercising in cool conditions. Hard to stay motivated on these hot summer days.
In this summer heat I prefer to workout indoors. Even working out indoors I’ve noticed that I need to drink more water to stay hydrated.
I tend to stay inside in the summer except to work in the garden.
I tend to get my workouts mowing the lawn and walking the dog. Most of the time I do it later in the evening.
