Good morning everyone! I am up early today (5 am) trying to get all of my work done before I leave at lunchtime. Going out today to a biz meeting, errands and a doctor’s appointment. Yikes, a lot on my plate today!!!
Today’s Topic: Yesterday I went out and had to go to the local shopping mall. I rarely go there as I don’t enjoy shopping at malls anymore. Just in the hour I was there I was completely grossed out by what I call “Hideous Fashion Mistakes” and thought I would tell you classy ladies what I saw.
* Middle-aged woman walking down the mall in her pajamas, slippers and had foam curlers in her hair!
* Twenty-something girl standing in line ahead of me at Bath & Body Works wearing Daisy Duke Shorts, her thong panties sticking out and her bra straps showing with her tank top. Oh yeah, her eye shadow was bright blue and clear up to her eyebrows!
* In that same line and behind me was another young woman wearing a black sheer gothic outfit with a hot pink bra underneath it, a black hat with netting (looked like a funeral hat) and thigh-high boots in 80 degree hot weather. Geesh.
* Out in the parking lot on my way out to get into my car I see a thirty-something year old gal wearing a white bikini swimsuit and flip-flops…her suit was see-thru and left nothing to the imagination. Why in the heck would you wear that into the mall? Really people? C’mon!
People are strange but dang it…what ever happened to dressing classy while out in public? I understand it is a different generation but my momma always told me that in public I had to dress and act like a classy woman, not trashy or immature. What kind of strange “fashion mistakes” do you see going on in your neighborhood?

It is so awful what people today think is appropriate clothes. I think showing too much skin in public is wrong! This is not the beach, so people need to cover up. The worst thing I have seen is butt cheeks. I can not stand seeing someones butt cheeks hanging out. It is so gross!
I wore white gloves to church back in the 1950s. Now I wear warm gloves when it’s cold out. In high school girls were not allowed to wear pants – had to wear dresses. I’m glad there’s more leeway today, but I agree with you about today’s fashion meltdowns.
I can not understand why some people dress like that. Do they want attention or do they think no one will notice or can they really not realize how horrible they look? I believe that each person should take pride in how he/she looks.
To wear see-through in a public mall where there are often little kids, etc. is just wrong.
Well, I got a good laugh out of your descriptions of your fellow shoppers! Here’s one I saw at the grocery store over the weekend: A young man (probably early twenties) in the bed of his pick-up, leaning over to get the grocery bags his female companion was handing up to him, and his pants were down so low I was surprised they didn’t fall off, and underneath was a pair of white boxer shorts with red lobsters all over them. Now, I’m in Maine where lobster decor is everywhere, but that was too funny!
ROFL….love it! hahahaha! My hubby has a pair of boxers with great horned owls printed on them and NO ONE sees them except for me and my housekeeper who helps with our laundry.
I have always told my daughter that there is a difference between dressing trashing/sexy and classy/sexy. I think at the age of 28 she does a pretty good job with the classy/sexy and doesn’t let crap hang out that shouldn’t be hanging out.
When I was a teen…Madonna mini skirts were all the rage. I admit, I had a few of them but never wore them to school. I did wear them to parties but my mom would of killed me if I wore them to the mall back then.
The ONLY time I go out of my house wearing pajamas and slippers is to the hospital or the doctor’s office when I am severely ill. I would NEVER go shopping or out to dinner wearing pajamas! Oh and the bra strap/thong thing sticking out…HELL NO! I won’t do that either!
I LOVE this post it totally cracked me up. I agree with you it is a total Freak show out there. I was at the grocery store a few months ago and I say a man in there in a bathrobe and slippers. I also see people all the time walking around in their pajamas it just makes me so mad. Oh and don’t get me started on the way young girls are dressing these days. I agree with you cover it up! Be classy and Please dress age appropriate and do not wear sleepwear in public!!!!!
People watching! You never know what you will see! And I have seen photos of my mother in law’s generation walking downtown, going shopping before malls, wearing hats, gloves and dresses. What do you think that generation of ladies would think of the way women dress in public today?
I’m laughing at these get ups – yikes! I had something happen similar in that I was at a light, watching high school kids get off the bus. I was convinced they had been allowed to wear Halloween costumes to school, when the slow realization came to me that is just how they dress and “do” their hair. And I used to get sent home for wearing culottes! Some of these places don’t have the nerve to send their employees home to get dressed, school – who knows?! and just going shopping in pj’s and curlers, unless you’re dreadfully ill, come on!
Hi Shelly,
I am a mother of a 6 year old and a 3 year old, both girls. Ever since I was little, I enjoy dressing like a Tom Boy, hang out with boys, and shopping in sports store. I never spent too much time learning about fashion and brand names, but I do like to buy ladies tank tops. Having said all that, I have no idea the “Hideous Fashion Mistakes People Make”, but worries about myself making it. My 6 year is very feminine, loves to wear dresses, try on nail polish (which i don’t use), and play with girls. At her age now, she thinks her mom has cool short hair, wears headband, shirts, and pants, loves to play squash, but what about in her teenage years? I think that I am going to have to dress up more lady like for her. Since I always wonder what those sales ladies were thinking when I walk into a Fashion store with my way too causal clothing.
I am a casual girl 90% of the time…unless I am attending a business function or special party. I live in casual clothes and love them. I just think the younger generation is out of control. I don’t want to see bra straps, thong panties sticking out, butt cheeks hanging out of shorts and definitely not see-thru bikini swimsuits when I am out shopping worn by these young ladies.
Congrats to the winners of course. OMG! Was it Halloween in May? Or perhaps a costume ball was going on at the mall. Or backwards day? Or maybe you were sleepwalking in the middle of some strange fashion nightmare! Ya know I watch a lot of classic movies on TCM and I sure wish we were back in the day sometimes when people took more pride in their appearance on a regular basis. Nothing wrong with being casual, but PJs at the mall? Good grief!
yeah…I was amazed at everything I saw yesterday. Hence, why I rarely go into the big mall here. That chic’s PJ’s were pink panther fleece ones…terrible!
