Gardening: Adding Hosta Plants to Your Garden

Gardening: Adding Hosta Plants to Your Garden

Jung Seed Company and Gardening SuppliesHow many of you are into gardening? For those of you who are…do you enjoy flower gardens, vegetable gardens or both? I’m a gardening fanatic now that we have our own home and I’ve been really educating myself on flowers, bushes, trees, veggies and fruits. Every season we add new plants in our garden and around our property.

Two years ago I introduced you all to Jung and featured a wonderful Blueberry Bush that I received for review. We planted that blueberry bush back then and I’m happy to report to you…that it’s doing fabulous! Every year it gets bigger and we get more & more blueberries off of it.

Jung sent me 3 complimentary Hosta Plants to review for you this gardening season and I’m excited to tell you about them today. What’s great about Hosta plants is that they come back year after year! In addition, you can grow them in sunny, partly sunny and/or partly shady areas around your property.

Minuteman Hosta Plant from Jung

We got one of the Minuteman Hosta plants and what I love about this particular one is the color. It’s a nice dark blue-green color with white accented cupped leaves. It’s a hardy plant that is slug-resistant and it can grow up to 20″ tall. During the mid-summer season you’ll see pale lavender flowers appear. It can be grown in zones 3 to 9 which is most of the United States. When it comes to planting, you’ll want to plant them in the spring and/or fall. They come shipped in a pot and guess what? These plants can attract hummingbirds to your garden!

Empress Wu Hosta Plant from Jung

We also received one of the Empress Wu Hosta plants which may be the largest Hosta in the world. Let’s just put it this way, it’s the largest that I’ve personally seen. The leaves can get up to 18″ in size and are a pretty dark green color. The plants are slug-resistant and can grow up to 4 feet tall by 6 feet wide. You’ll want to find a nice space in your yard or garden for the big boy to grow! During the early to mid-summer season, you’ll notice some violet colored flowers emerging from the top. Just like the first variety, it can attract hummingbirds too!

Frances Williams Hosta Plant from Jung

Finally, we received the Frances Williams Hosta to plant too! I’m familiar with this variety and have 2-3 of them around the back of the house that have been there for years. The foliage is a deep blue-green color with a golden outer edge. These plants can grow up to 24″ high by 40″ wide. Of course, growth size will depend on where you plant them and how well you take care of them. During the mid-summer season you’ll see white flowers appear above the foliage. Just like the first two, if you love hummingbirds (like me) this one can attract them too!

If you’re a newbie gardener or an experienced gardener, these Hosta plants are for you! We all have areas in our yard or garden that needs some help. What I love about Hosta plants is that I can plant them in shady areas or partly shaded areas and they grow just fine!

Jung Hosta Plants

When you first get them…you’ll want to prepare your soil and plant them according to directions. You’ll then water them immediately after planting. During the first 2-3 weeks, I like to water my new plants 2-3 times a week. After that, I’ll water them if we haven’t had rainfall for a few days. Watering schedules will depend on your area and the type of weather you’re receiving. Basically though, these are no mess and no fuss type of gardening plants!

Tips for Growing Bleeding Hearts

Tips for Growing Bleeding Hearts

I live in the northeast and I’m always looking for flowers and plants that will grow well in planting zone 4. Our winters can get bone-chilling cold and our summers can be blistering hot. We have a few shady areas on our property and I

Spring Gardening – Early Bloomers

Spring Gardening – Early Bloomers

Grape HyacinthsI’m not a fan of winter at all and always find that season of the year depressing. Matter of fact, as soon as winter starts, I start counting down to the first day of Spring!

Spring has finally arrived here on the northeast coast and I was pretty excited to see it’s first signs on Monday, March 21st. Usually I see my daffodils popping up out of the ground around March 10th or so…but this year, my flowers are obviously a little behind.

Yellow Daffodils

Every Spring season the first two flowers that I see pop up in my garden are my daffodils and my mini grape hyacinths. I’m not sure why they call them mini grape hyacinths around here because they aren’t hyacinths at all. I’m not sure of their proper names and will have to do some research on that.

My daffodils (miniature and full-size) along with those grape hyacinths are my first spring bloomers every year and they will typically bloom for 2 to 2 1/2 weeks. Once they are done…I will see my regular hyacinths and tulips popping up next.

Two-Tone Daffodils

When you plan out your flower beds it’s always important to plant a variety of flowers that bloom at different times, that way you’ll always have something blooming throughout your growing and gardening season. Here in the northeast, that means that daffodils and grape hyacinths are GREAT choices for your first bloomers.

If you are looking for second bloomers, I would recommend tulips and hyacinths which typically start blooming just as your first bloomers are ending. I plant both inter-changeably in my flower beds that way I always have something in bloom from mid March through Mid April.

Once they are done…then my late Spring and early Summer flowers start coming in. I’ll tell you more about those in a new post later next month. I love flower gardening and veggie gardening and this year I’ll be sharing some gardening tips with all of you here on the blog.
