Math Slam from Educational InsightsToday I would like to introduce you to the company called Educational Insights based out of Southern California. Educational Insights is the manufacturer of playful products with serious educational value, including subject-specific classroom products, teacher resources, educational toys, and games. Their products are designed by seasoned educators & parents who know that children love to learn when you make that learning experience fun!

When you visit the Educational Insights online web site you will find that it’s really easy to navigate. The web site has three tabbed categories which are the sections for Parents, Teachers and Classroom Jeopardy. Since I am a mother and grandmother…I could spend hours just browsing around their parent’s section of the web site.

My Review: I received the electronic Math Slam game from Educational Insights to review for all of you. This product is made for ages 5 and up and will require 3 C batteries. You will need a flat-head screw driver to remove the battery cover to put your batteries in. The reason I am mentioning this is I feel that is an important safety feature as we don’t need our kids playing with batteries so they won’t be able to get these out of there without a parent’s help. The electronic Math Slam game is really a nice size…it is about 9″ by 6″ in size…not one of those itty bitty hand-held games…this is a super nice size! There is an adjustable volume button on the right side so that your kid’s can control the volume.

Object of the Game: Read the question on the screen and then scan the possible answers that show up under the colored circles and you want to slam the circle that has the correct answer. Your child will need to move quickly as each 10 question game is timed and the faster you get through the questions, the higher your score will be! The missed questions are recycled until they are answered correctly, ensuring comprehensive comprehension and mastery. As your child goes on…the difficulty will increase so that the game is challenging to them.

We invited my nephew C over to play the game with my hubby and he is 9 years old but has difficulties in math so we knew this game was best for him. Hubby and C sat down and hubby showed C how to play the Math Slam game. As the question came up, C scanned the colored discs for the correct answer and would slap the colored disc that he thought was the right answer. What is really cool about the Math Slam is that it talks to your child and it there are colored lights under each disc! When it comes to the game talking to your child…it is a nice & clear voice and easy to understand…there is no second guessing what the game “host” said. The game does tell you child if he/she guessed the correct answer or the wrong answer and if they guessed wrong, that question will be asked again at the end of the round. There are 5 different types of math games to be played ranging from putting numbers in the correct order, to adding numbers together, to subtracting numbers, finding the mystery number and so forth.

This is a wonderful game that is fun, educational and very entertaining. In my opinion, every child should have this game as it certainly will help to improve their math skills and it does it a fun and entertaining way! We give it a huge 1+1 = 2 thumbs up!

ThriveTime for Teens Board Game

Today we are posting a review for all of you on a fabulous board game for teens called ThriveTime for Teens which is geared towards teenagers aged 13 years and older. This game is by a company called Pay Your Family First and the game was developed by their CEO & Founder named Sharon Lechter. ThriveTime for teens is the first-of-its-kind money & life reality board game just for teenagers. The game offers fun, interactive and family-fun approach to empowering teens with the basic financial skills, each decision in the game either drives you to thriving success or diving debt. The game delivers real-life experiences with credit cards, jobs, work/life balance, time management, savings and charity.

Our Review: We received this board game a few weeks ago to review so I invited my 10 year old nephew and his 13 year old brother over to our home for a game play date with us. We spent 10 minutes or so reading over the instructions which were pretty easy to understand. Hubby and I helped each of the boys but basically it was the two of them playing against one another. Each player starts as a teenager with a part time job and throughout the game they are faced with real life scenarios around which they will make decisions on how to spend their time & money. Each decision the boys made had a financial impact on them and they updated their game sheet (their own personal financial statement) as they played the game. During each turn one of them would draw a game card that describes situations ranging from losing $100 off their pay check at their part time job for being late to work, how to make extra money by doing chores or odd jobs for neighbors & friends, how to invest in stock, save or pay for college, how to come up with money to donate to charity and so forth. The game continues on until one player reaches the thrive circle on the game board.

It took the boys almost an hour to play the game and they had a great time playing it. Hubby and I found it pretty insightful on how teenagers view money and how they would save/spend it. I think adults would even have fun playing this game and it’s a great game for family game night if you have older children/teens to play it with.

Purchasing Information: This game ThriveTime for Teens is available for purchase at http://www.thrivetimegame.com and at Teaching Stuff locations in Phoenix, Arizona. The game retails for $29.95 and makes a great gift for teens!

We would like to thank ThriveTime for Teens for sending us this wonder and important board game to play with the kids in our family. We will be playing it again with them as we feel it teaches them valuable learning lessons when it comes to handling money. We give the game a big two thumbs up!!!
