Fun, Frugal, Finds – Big Lots Bargains and Deals

Like most women…I enjoy shopping! With that said, I’m all about hunting down the best bargains and deals. Over the past several years I’ve shared several posts here on the blog that feature some of the best bargains that I’ve found. Today, I’m back again

Coastal Style Upcycled Wood Storage Crates

Coastal Style Upcycled Wood Storage Crates

Last year I received a foodie gift basket that arrived in a wooden storage crate. While I loved all of the foodie goodies…I absolutely hated the wood storage crate! Why you might ask? Well…it was done in a redwood stain which doesn’t work in my coastal style home! Since I had no need for the crate…I tossed it into my yard sale box and had planned on getting rid of it.

Well, I had a change of heart. I decided to upcycle it and turn it into a beautiful piece that would work with my coastal & beach home decor. I got it out of the box and here is how I transformed it.

The first thing that that I did was clean it! I wiped it down and then used some fine grade sandpaper on it. Wipe it down with a damp cloth and left it air dry overnight. The following day I gave it a new paint job! Using a foam brush I added 2 coats of white paint inside and out. I made sure that I got into all of the nooks and crannies and left it dry overnight.

I found an unfinished wood starfish cutout at my local craft supply store. I decided to paint it with 2 coats of gold acrylic metallic craft paint. I left it dry for 4 hours. I used wood glue to attach it to the front of the wooden crate and left it dry for several hours. I took a quarter and traced around it 4 times on a piece of white craft felt. Using scissors I cut out my circles and then glued my new “felt feet” onto the bottom of the crate. Now it won’t scratch any surfaces!

For now I’m using my new coastal style wooden storage crate to hold some of my beauty supplies in our one bathroom. It fits perfectly on top of the toilet tank which looks really nice. I’m not sure if I will keep it there or move it somewhere else, but for now…that’s how I’m using it.

You can easily change the color of your gift baskets and wooden storage crates by just using a little bit of paint! A win-win for me!

Frugal Tips – After Season Deals on Winter Home Goods and More

Frugal Tips – After Season Deals on Winter Home Goods and More

Frugal Tips by Shelly at TwoClassyChicsWell, we’ve just about made it through the cold and long winter season and now spring is officially just around the corner. I don’t know about all of you…but I’m ready for a ton of sunshine and warmth to return. I’m not a fan of winter, so I’ve been excited to see spring arrive.

Now that the cold season will be ending…it’s time to stock up on those wintertime items that you’ll need for next year. I went out shopping to specifically buy new throw blankets for my home and for my grandchildren to toss onto their beds at their house. Let’s face it, throw blankets can really get a workout and often times are the last things that we replace.

I had a 25% off coupon to one of my favorite discount department stores, so I headed there first. I went straight to their linens department and into the clearance section. My 25% off coupon was good towards any purchase…regular priced or clearance priced merchandise. To get the most bang for my buck, I wanted to scope out the clearance throw blankets first and I hit the jackpot!

Bargain Deals on Plush Throw Blankets

We love using those plush, super-soft, microfiber throw blankets and I found a big selection of them on clearance. What was really nice is that these throw blankets are what I call medium weight. They weren’t heavy-weight winter blankets and they weren’t bed-sheet thin either. Just the perfect year-round weight.

They were originally priced at $29.99 each and were marked down on clearance to $10.00 each. They had 9 different colors left in-stock to choose from. With my 25% off coupon, the price came down to $7.50 per throw blanket! I decided to stock up and bought 6 of them! The grandchildren each got new throw blankets for their beds (at their house), two throw blankets for my family room and the other two I’m going to hold onto for future gifts. Yes, I have a “gift closet” where I stash pre-purchased gifts throughout the year. Can ya believe it??? I got them each for $7.50 when each one was regularly priced at $30.00? What a deal.

Now that the seasons are getting ready to change…it’s the best time to go out and buy your winter blankets, flannel sheets, heavy comforters, winter coats, jackets, scarves, hats, gloves, boots, etc. Yes…grab up those left-over clearance deals while you can! Additional tip: Don’t select the trendy items, wild color schemes, etc. Try to stick with the classic styles and neutral colors, etc. They will work for years to come and if you’re gifting items…you’ll have more options with that too!
