How to Clean and Preserve Conch Shells

How to Clean and Preserve Conch Shells

I’ve been collecting seashells for over 40 years. I have all different type’s, sizes, and colors in my collection. If I had to estimate the number that I have…I would have to say 400 or more. Not only do I collect them…but I use them

I’ve been collecting seashells for 35+ years. When I say collecting, I’m talking about seashells that I’ve personally picked up off of a beach somewhere during our travels. I have 6 boxes of labeled shells that are for my collection and then I have 8-10

DIY Craft Project Tic-Tac-Toe Board Game

DIY Craft Project Tic-Tac-Toe Board Game

How many of you enjoy the old classic games that we used to play as kids? I know that I do! Well, I wanted to share my love for some of those old classic games with my grandchildren and decided to make my own Tic-Tac-Toe board game.

What’s really unique about this craft project is that you can use either smooth river rocks or medium-sized seashells for the playing pieces. The rest of the items I purchased at my local craft supply store and in total I spent LESS than $4.00 to make the entire game set! Since I’m a beach-lover, I painted the set in white with metallic purple and metallic turquoise accenting colors.

Line your work surface with newspaper.

Game Board: I painted the front and back of the wooden game board with 2 coats of white acrylic paint. I accented the edge of the game board with metallic turquoise colored acrylic paint. Let dry.

I measured the game board with a ruler and then divided that number into thirds. I drew my lines on with pencil and then painted the lines with the purple metallic paint. You need a total of 9 squares for the game. Let dry.

Playing Pieces: I selected 8 river rocks that were the perfect size to fit within the spaces on the board. You’ll want to paint the river rocks with 2 coats of paint. You’ll need 4 rocks in each of your 2 selected colors. Let dry.

Wooden Tote: This tote is the perfect size to hold all of the river rocks (playing pieces), so I opted to paint the entire wooden tote with the purple metallic paint. Once dry, you can decorate the front with whatever you choose. I selected a small-sized scallop seashell and adhered it to the front of the tote using E6000 adhesive glue.

Finishing: Take everything outside and lay it onto newspaper. Use the spray acrylic clear sealer to give everything a good coating. Let dry. Flip your pieces over and spray the other side. Let dry thoroughly.

DIY Project Wishing Well Garden Planter – Coastal Style

DIY Project Wishing Well Garden Planter – Coastal Style

DIY Project: Wishing Well Garden Planter - Coastal StyleLast month my mom gave me an old wooden wishing well flower planter that she picked up at a local yard sale for $1.00. She was going to sit it out on her deck, but then decided to give it to me. She decorates in a country-style, so I knew right away that I would have to paint it and decorate it to fit within my beach & coastal style landscaping.

Today, I’m going to share with you how I did it, just in case you want to try a similar type of project.

DIY Project: Wishing Well Garden Planter - Coastal Style

First…I used 2 cans of white “matte finish” exterior spray paint. To cover up all of that dark red color, I needed to do three coats over the entire wishing well. Since I did the project on a hot 90 degree day, I only had to let each coat of paint dry for about 20-30 minutes before spraying it again.

Once it was completely dry, I added 2 coats of exterior clear glossy sealer over-the-top. It’s found in the spray paint section and will protect the wood from weather & sun damage. During the winter season I store my goodies in our garden shed and then in the springtime, I’ll hit some of them again with a light coat of the spray sealer to keep them looking nice.

Every time we go down to the beach house I will talk numerous walks up & down the beach collecting seashells and other beach goodies. I clean them and then store them in plastic bins to use on craft projects or as decorations & landscaping accents around our home.

When gluing seashells onto my craft projects I like to use E6000 Adhesive. It comes in a squeeze tube and is very strong! I like to apply it using a cotton swab onto the seashell or sea stone and then adhere it to my project. You’ll want to let everything sit and dry for at least 12 hours or overnight. Don’t use hot glue, regular craft glue, etc. Those won’t hold up to summer heat, winter cold, rain, etc. Trust me, you need to use a good adhesive like E-6000.

For now, I have a planter sitting inside my wooden wishing well with cats & kittens in it. However, I’m thinking about filling up the well with some sand and tossing in some pieces of drift wood, conch shells & other large seashells that I’ve found on my travels. Sigh…decisions!
