You’ll need 4″ to 5″ wide clam shells. Wash and thoroughly dry. For the design…I used fabric that I picked up at my local arts & craft store. I purchased just a 1/4 yard. It was on clearance so I got it for a great price. The design features birds, dogs and cats in various Christmas attire.

To get the fabric design to blend in with the seashell I base coated each seashell in the background color of the fabric swatch. Example: Lime Green, Pinky Red and Turquoise. I used 2 coats of acrylic craft paint with 30 minutes of drying time between each coat.

Use sharp scissors to cut the design out of fabric. You I cut fairly close to the image but did round, square or rectangular shapes so that it was easy to apply onto the shell. Use a foam brush and Mod Podge Clear Sealer for the next step. Brush the Mod Podge onto the shell. Place the fabric piece on top. Use the brush to flatten it out to remove wrinkles and air bubbles. Brush more Mod Podge on top of the fabric piece and then apply Mod Podge all over the seashells to cover the paint and fabric. Let dry for a few hours.

If you want to add additional decoration or wordage…do that before the final coat of Mod Podge. All paint colors and fabric need to be sealed with it. If you look at the pinky red Cat shell you’ll see that I added polka dots onto the shell’s background and onto the fabric to give it a “blended” look. I added the words Merry Christmas onto the lime green Dog shell using a Betem Paint Pen Marker. The Turquoise colored Dog shell also has light colored polka dots in the background. If you’re adding them…add a few to the fabric too!

You can use the painted and decoupaged Christmas seashells as holiday decorations, place settings on the dining room table, as paper weights on a desk, to decorate the front porch or garden area or add a hanging string onto the back to turn them into colorful Christmas tree ornaments!

I’m including 3 photos in this post to help guide you with the design process.

Angel Ornament #1 – You’ll need 1 scallop seashell and 3 small clam shells along with acrylic craft paint, a paint brush, Gorilla Glue, 1/8″ wide satin ribbon scrap, scissors and a piece of clear fishing line to make the hanger.  I recommend spraying the finished shell with a coat of Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer once finished.

Paint 2 of the small clam shells with gold metallic paint, 1 clam shell with silver metallic paint and the scallop shell with red metallic paint. Let dry until the paint is no longer tacky. It will take about an hour or so. Using Gorilla Glue you want to attach the seashells together to form the angel shape. I don’t recommend hot glue or regular craft glue…they’ll fall apart quickly. Use Gorilla Glue in the fine-tip nozzle bottle. Set aside for 2 hours to allow the glue to set.

While the glue is drying…make a small satin ribbon bow. Cut a 6″ long piece of clear fishing line. Knot the two ends together to form a hanging loop. Glue the bow and hanging loop onto the angel ornament.

Angel Ornament #2 – You’ll need 1 scallop seashell, a pack of BETEM Acrylic Paint Markers, clear fishing line, clear acrylic spray sealer and scissors.

I use and recommend BETEM Acrylic Paint Markers. They’re not kiddie markers, they contain acrylic paint. They feature dual-ended tips, reuire no priming, no drips or leaks, no clogging at the tip and no foul paint odors. Plus, they dry quickly. Use the paint markers to paint the Angel design onto the inside of the scallop seashell. Use the gold metallic marker to outline the shell. Let dry for an hour or two.

Take it outside and spray both sides of the scallop shell with a light coat of Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer. Let dry. Cut a 6″ long piece of clear fishing line. Knot the two ends together to form a hanging loop. Glue the hanging loop onto the back of the shell.

Hand Painted Folk Art Angel Clam Shell Seashell Designs

Angel Seashell Decor #3 – You’ll need a 3″ to 5″ wide clam shell, BETEM Acrylic Paint Markers, a pencil and Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer.

Base coat the clam shell with 1-2 coats of acrylic paint in your desired color. Let dry. Use a pencil to sketch the design onto the shell. This was done free-handed, so it doesn’t need to look perfect! Use BETEM Acrylic Paint Markers to color-in the design. Finish up by adding a gold metallic halo and a gold metallic outer rim around the clam shell. Let dry for 1-2 hours.

Take the seashell outside and lightly spray it with 1-2 coats of a Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer. Let dry for 2-3 hours.
