Hand Painted Gnome Clam Shell Seashells

Gmomes are one of the hottest decorating trends going on in the USA and continue to grow in popularity. I personally think they’re adorable! I like using them as decorating accents on my front porch, back deck and in my flower gardens. You can make these hand painted Gnome Clam Shell Seashells in just one day and you don’t have to be a professional artist to make them.

Acrylic Paint Pens
Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer
Pencil with Eraser

No template nor pattern was used. This design was free-handed onto the clam shell using a pencil. Use the photograph for reference.

Base coat the clam shell with 2 coats of acrylic paint in your desired color. I used a chocolate brown so that the other colors in the gnome would “pop” against the chocolate brown. Let dry.

Use a pencil to sketch the design onto the seashell. It doesn’t have to be perfect. The body is basically a pear shape so make that first then add the hat, arms and legs. To make it simple to do…I use acrylic paint pens for all of the decorating. I like the Betem Acrylic Paint Pens because of the dual ends (a fine tip and a medium tip). After your done with the design work let it thoroughly dry.

Take the painted gnome seashells outside. Spray them with 2 coats of a clear acrylic spray sealer. This will help to protect the painted finish and to preserve the seashell for years to come. If you’re going to display them outside, I recommend re-spraying them 3-4 times a year to keep them looking nice.

Tropical Pineapple Painted and Decoupage Clam Seashells

Tropical Pineapple Painted and Decoupage Clam Seashells

I’m getting ready for summer and everything that comes along with the new season. Backyard pool parties, barbecues, beach walks, hiking, camping, gardening, etc. It’s my favorite season out of the year. Last week I made these cute tropical pineapple themed painted and decoupage clam shells seashells. I’m going to put them outside on a table near our pool area.

Tropical Pineapple Painted and Decoupage Clam Seashells

These cute seashells are an easy-to-make craft project. The Chiquita portion of the shell was made from the paper label off of fresh pineapples that I purchased at the grocery store. Just snip them off with scissors carefully. They’re not stickers but paper tags that were hanging on each one.

To get started you want to wash and dry your clam shells. I used ones that measure at least 4″ wide. Washed in Dawn Liquid Dish Soap (soaked in the soapy water for 15 minutes) and then rinsed with clean water. Left to dry overnight.

Base coat each one with 2 coats of either white acrylic craft paint or pineapple yellow/orange craft paint. You’ll need to allow 30 minutes of drying time between coats. Now comes the fun the part…decorating them!

Tropical Pineapple Painted and Decoupage Clam Seashells

I used 2 paper tags from fresh pineapples purchased at the grocery store (see above) as the center decoration. From the Dollar Tree Store I purchased a pack of pineapple themed rub-on decals. I used Mod Pod Decoupage in a Glossy Finish to attach the paper tags onto the shells. Left it thoroughly dry. I then rubbed-on the decals that I purchased from Dollar Tree. If you want to add wording like “You’re Sweet” use an Acrylic Paint Marker (not a regular marker). Let everything dry.

To finish up you want to give the entire seashell aka clam shell a coat of Mod Podge Sealer on the front and back of the shell. This helps to protect the decorations and helps to protect the seashell while being displayed outdoors. Let dry for 24 hours before placing it outside to allow everything to set and cure.
