Get the Kids in the Kitchen with The Complete Cookbook for Young Chefs from America’s Test Kitchen

The Complete Cookbook for Young Chefs from America’s Test KitchenLate last year, America’s Test Kitchen launched a new brand, America’s Test Kitchen Kids, to encourage kids to get cooking. Their free kid-centric website is aimed at kids aged 8 to 13, providing videos, recipes, quizzes, experiments, and more, to pique kids’ interest in food and cooking. Part of this new brand initiative is the release of The Complete Cookbook for Young Chefs: 100+ Recipes You’ll Love to Cook and Eat!

Unlike many books for children, The Complete Cookbook for Young Chefs isn’t condescending and doesn’t talk down to them. In this book, America’s Test Kitchen does what they do best, and that’s convey good information while simultaneously making you want to try their techniques and recipes. The difference is that this book is for young people, starting with the very basics like cleanliness and safety, and it has a much more fun slant with features kids will enjoy, like quotes from other kids sharing their thoughts.

The Complete Cookbook for Young Chefs from America’s Test Kitchen

The book is designed to be visually appealing to kids, with friendly fonts, colorful sidebars, catchy headings, and cute drawings of kitchen utensils. Each recipe includes key symbols to indicate its difficulty level and whether it requires the use of a knife, microwave, stovetop, and/or oven. And the people in the photos are kids! Even the hands in the pictures that demonstrate techniques are kids’ hands, so youngsters will relate to what they’re seeing.

Beyond the visual appeal, everything else about The Complete Cookbook for Young Chefs is geared for kids, too, including the construction of the recipes themselves. For example, each recipe is broken into three distinct sections, Prepare Ingredients, Gather Cooking Equipment, and Start Cooking. These steps are essential even for adult cooks—in fact, professional chefs practice “mise en place,” prepping their ingredients before they begin. I love that America’s Test Kitchen is helping kids learn good kitchen practices that will last them a lifetime, while instilling creativity and enjoyment.

Although this cookbook is for kids, adults will like it, too. Even experienced cooks can use a primer in the basics, and many of the recipes will appeal to grown-ups; I may not need the recipe for Classic Grilled Cheese Sandwiches, but the Sweet and Tangy Glazed Salmon is on my list to try. The recipes in The Complete Cookbook for Young Chefs range from the very simple (Yogurt and Berry Parfaits) to full meals (One-Pot Pasta with Quick Tomato Sauce), and include beverages, snacks, desserts, entrees, side dishes, and more. If you know a kid, you know someone who will love this book.

Change Bites – Using Change Management Principles to Change Your Diet

Change Bites – Using Change Management Principles to Change Your Diet

Change Bites: 5 Change Management Strategies to Transform Your HealthChange is an inevitable part of life, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to achieve or to cope with. When you need to completely change your diet, it can rock your world—it can affect nearly everything you do, as well as the people close to you. If you’re going through this and you’re feeling overwhelmed, Certified Health Coach Marissa Costonis is here to help, with her book Change Bites: 5 Change Management Strategies to Transform Your Health.

* Complimentary book received for review. This post may contain affiliate links.

Costonis knows what she’s talking about, both from the point of view of a change management specialist and that of a person who had to drastically change her diet. Having spent years as a business consultant on change management, she realized that she could employ those change management strategies in her own life to ease her transition to her new way of eating. She understands how this transition can seem daunting, if not insurmountable, and she simplifies the process by encouraging change “one bite at a time.” She reasons that taking small “bites” is easier and makes the goal more attainable than trying to take on the entire change at once.

Change Bites: 5 Change Management Strategies to Transform Your Health

Because Change Bites is about the process of making a dietary change, its principles can be applied to whatever your desired end result might be, whether it’s vegetarian, vegan, paleo, keto, gluten-free, or just a desire to eat more healthfully. It also can help whether you have to make a complete change in your diet or just want to modify your eating style.

Change Bites is not merely a self-help or how-to book; it’s also a workbook, with spaces for recording your experiences and thoughts as you work through your own change. Some are set up as exercises to help you identify things like problems and solutions. It’s very helpful and makes the book more personal.

Change Bites: 5 Change Management Strategies to Transform Your Health

Adding to that approach, Costonis includes “bites” in each chapter that both illustrate and personalize the points she’s making:

• Personal Bite: The author’s own experience, including her struggles and successes, and how she employed the strategies
• Business Bite: Examples of the change management process companies use, and how it can apply to making a personal change
• Before You Bite: Things to think about before employing a given chapter’s principles

If this approach appeals to you, check out Costonis’s website and Facebook page, where you can learn more about her and how she can help you make your own transition in a lasting way.
