6 Tips on How to Clean Your Carpets

6 Tips on How to Clean Your CarpetsI was talking with my sister yesterday and the topic of the weather came up and how hard it is to keep the carpets clean with all of the salt, mud and wet snow that we are dealing with in many parts of the country. I am finding that out first hand myself with the snowstorm we just came through. The carpets are full of dirt and mud. My sister said she could not stand looking at her dirty carpets anymore so even though they are still getting snow, she is calling in the professionals for rug cleaning, where she lives.

It got me to thinking about some tips on how to keep our carpets looking great all the time and to make them last as long as possible. So here are some of my tips for keeping your carpets looking great, even with the snow, rain and ice issues we face.

1) Know the type of carpet you have and how to clean it best. Different styles like loop, plush, berber, have different cleaning methods.

2) Spot clean immediately when spills and dirt occur.

3) Vacuum your carpets often to keep any dust, mites, dirt or matting from building up in your carpets and rugs.

4) Re Arrange your furniture often so heavily trafficked area are relieved and you don’t develop paths.

5) Clean heavy traffic areas often.

6) Have your carpets and large rugs deep cleaned by a professional rug and carpet cleaning company at least once a year. Water pressure is known to work the best and will pull out excess dirt, dust and stains. Make sure that it dries completely so mold does not develop.

With these tips, you can keep your carpets and rugs looking good all the time. I hate dirty carpets and these are the tips I use on mine!

This week we thought we would share three of our favorite eco-friendly kitchen cleaning tips with all of you.

Tip #1 Cleaning Kitchen Floors & Wiping Down Appliances

When it comes to cleaning and disinfecting your kitchen floors you don’t have to use strong chemical cleaners that are expensive and harmful to you, your children and your pets. Here is a cost-effective way that you can clean your kitchen floors and it’s eco-friendly!

In a clean bucket of warm water, pour in a 1/2 cup of white vinegar and 1 tablespoon of lemon, orange or lime essential oil. Use a clean mop to mop your floors and let them dry. (safe for tile and linoleum floors).

To clean your appliances, use a clean bucket of warm water with a 1/2 cup of white vinegar and a few drops of citrus scented essential oil. When wiping down your appliances use a clean sponge or (my favorite) a microfiber cleaning cloth and let them dry. If you have any smudges or streaks, use a clean dry microfiber cleaning cloth to polish them up.

Tip #2 Homemade All-Purpose Kitchen Spray Cleaner

This homemade all-purpose cleaner is great to use in the kitchen (or bathroom) and is really simple to make. Take a clean plastic spray bottle and fill it 1/2 way with white vinegar and 1/2 way with cool tap water. (note: leave about 1/2″ room at the top). Next, squeeze half of a fresh lemon into your spray bottle (fresh lemon juice) and place the top on. Shake your bottle gently for about 10 seconds to mix the three ingredients together.

Great cleaner for cleaning the microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher, stove, countertops, etc.

Tip #3 Hand-Held Steam Cleaner

I’ve been using a hand-held steam cleaner for several years to do a LOT of my tasks around the house. I can use it with no chemical cleansers at all, since it uses the power of hot steam to get things sparkling clean with little to no effort. The Visio Hand-Held Steam Cleaner is my favorite. I use to to clean my windows, counter-tops, glass top stove, my glass oven door, tile walls in my bathroom, stainless steel kitchen sink, under the rim of my toilets, tiled floors, etc. It’s absolutely fantastic and it gets the job done quickly and easily.
