Why Your Home Has So Much Dust

Why Your Home Has So Much Dust

What is it that causes dust to accumulate in the home so quickly and in such large quantities? Do you feel like you are always trying to wipe up dust and not making much headway? This is a problem for a lot of people, and we want to share with you our tips for how to eliminate dust in the home as well as explain why there may be such a dust problem there.

Where Does Dust Come From?

How do you get so much dust in your home anyway? Is there a dust fairy who comes through at night and spreads her particles of allergy everywhere? Not really, but if there are plenty of people (or pets) living in your home, then you will have lots of dust. A large portion of the dust that accumulates in a given space comes from dead skin cells. Each day, we lose tons of skin cells that simply fall off our body, and many of those collect as dust. The more people and critters you have in home, the more dust there will be.

Now, skin cells sloughing off don’t account for all the dust. You also get dust from dirt that is tracked inside the house as well as from particles that come in through the windows and doors and blow inside our house. If you leave windows open through much of the day, you are more likely to have dust building up. If you are not careful about how much dirt you are tracking into your home, then dust will accumulate through your shoes and other clothing.

Change Bad Habits

There are a number of behaviors that contribute to dust buildup, and you may want to change some of those if you want to reduce how much dust there is in your house. We have a few suggestions for you, but there may be others you can think of that apply better to you and to your particular situation.

Cleanup after Brushing– If you clean up the sink or other area that you use for brushing your hair, that will eliminate some dust. You can gather up the loose hairs and put them in the trash instead of allowing them to sit on the sink or in the bathroom until a convenient time.

Place Shoes Outside– One big way to keep dust and dirt out of your home is to make people take off their shoes before entering and to have an outside shoe rack. This may seem odd to many people, but it works so well at eliminating a lot of the dust and dirt that accumulate in a person’s home. If you can stop dirty shoes from even entering the house, that will make a big impact.

Reduce Clutter– This is a great way to get rid of dust and keep dust from piling up. It gives dust fewer places to hide out and collect, so it is wise to eliminate clutter as much as possible and to make it a habit to keep clutter low.

Clean Up Your Air

One way you can fight against dust is to improve the air quality in your home. It is possible that your air quality is poor because of the environment you’re living in. You may not be able to fix that and change your location very easily, but you can do a few things to make the air more breathable and healthier.

If you have bad air in your surroundings, keeping the doors and windows closed often will help with the air quality issue. That way, you can focus on controlling the air that is inside your house rather than doing both that and fighting against bad air from coming inside the home as well.

Another helpful thing you can do is to install HEPA air filters in your home. These filter out dust and pathogens and improve air quality over a period of time. Make sure you buy a filter that is a good fit for your HVAC system and keep it clean and changed out as often as necessary.

A third suggestion to improve air quality is to buy an air purifier and set it up in key locations throughout the home. Put it in those rooms where dust tends to accumulate or where air quality is most vital, like the bedroom. Running the air purifier regularly can eliminate a lot of dust and other particles from the air. Ensure that the purifier is changed out and cleaned often so that you’re not recirculating dirty air and so that the purifier can do its work effectively.

Hire Professional Cleaning Services

We also want to suggest that you have your home professionally cleaned every now and then. If you live up in the mountains, you are going to have different environmental problems than someone who lives down in a valley or in a flat area. Your location can affect your air quality and the amount of dust you have to deal with, and mountain home cleaning specialists can help you tidy things up and get rid of the dust.

Any kind of professional cleaning service will help to make your home cleaner and freer dust. They can do a very thorough cleaning, especially if you request a deep cleaning, and their services can be helpful if you’re trying to reduce dust in your home. We would suggest having professional cleaners come in throughout the year to eliminate as much dust as possible and give you less dust to fight with when you clean.

Closing Thoughts

We hope that the tips we have provided here are very helpful to you and allow you to fight dust more effectively. There may be a lot of dust that you have to deal with, but now you will be better equipped to handle it, and you may better understand why you have a dust problem and what you can do about it. We hope you can soon enjoy a much cleaner home.

Remove the turn-table and anything else that you have inside the microwave. Lightly spray a small amout of the Dawn Platinum Plus Powerwash Dish Spray on a damp microfiber cleaning cloth or a little bit directly on the baked on gunk inside the microwave. You ONLY need a little bit! If you’re spraying it directly on the grime…let it sit for 5 minutes, so that it breaks it down for easy cleaning.

Use the damp microfiber cleaning cloth to wipe up the entire inside of the microwave. Get the sides, top and the bottom. The food debris, grease and grime wipes right up! Rinse the cleaning cloth under clean water in your kitchen sink. Wring it out and wipe the inside of the microwave again. I do this 2 times to make sure you I get any remaining residue out.

Rinse out the cleaning cloth with clean water and wipe down the outside one more time to remove any remaining residue. That’s it, you’re done!
