Spring Cleaning Tips: Indoor Light Fixtures

Spring Cleaning Tips: Indoor Light Fixtures

Spring Cleaning Tips: Indoor Light FixturesTwo weeks ago I started my annual spring cleaning and have been dedicating a minimum of 4 hours every week to cleaning, organizing and down-sizing things around our house. I go through this process twice a year during the spring and fall seasons.

How many of you take the time to take down all of your indoor light fixtures and give them a good cleaning? Have you ever noticed how dirty they get? The ones in the kitchen not only get dirty…but they get greasy too! If you haven’t cleaned them lately, its time to do it!

Go around your house and take down all of those glass globes from your ceiling fan lights, bathroom vanity lights, hallway lights, kitchen & bathroom lights, etc. If you’re really in the cleaning mood I recommend tackling your porch and deck lights at the same time!!!

Before I start the process I gather up all of my cleaning supplies and equipment. Here is what I recommend that you have on hand:

Old Hand or Bath Cotton Towels
Microfiber Cleaning Cloths
Mr. Clean Magic Erasers (for cleaning)
Krud Kutter All-Purpose Cleaner
Dawn Dish Liquid Soap
Old Plastic Placemat or Rubber Sink Liner
Small Plastic Bowl (to hold screws)
Step Stool or Small Step Ladder

Lay out a clean towel onto your counter-top or table top. Go around your house and take down all of your glass light fixtures, globes and sconces. Place the screws into a plastic bowl (so they don’t get lost) and lay all of the dirty fixtures onto the towel.

Line your kitchen sink with a sink liner or an old plastic placemat. This will protect your glass items from chipping or cracking while you’re washing them. Fill up your sink 1/3 of the way with warm, soapy water. I like to use Dawn Dish Liquid Soap as its great for removing the grease, especially from the light fixtures from your kitchen. You should wash one item at a time!!!

Use the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to scrub down the item. I find that they’re great for removing built-up dirt, debris and grease. Rinse clean with cool running water. If you have “filthy” pieces that aren’t coming clean I recommend that you lightly spray them down with Krud Kutter All-Purpose Cleaner. Let the solution sit on them for 5 minutes and then use the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and soapy water to scrub them down. Rinse clean.

I like to personally lay out a separate cotton towel onto my floor and then lay all of the clean pieces on top. I let them air dry for an hour. If they’re damp or have any streaks…I polish them up with a microfiber cleaning cloth. Once they’re completely dry you can put them back up!

Spring Cleaning Tips: Indoor Light Fixtures

You will be AMAZED at how bright the light looks again in the rooms that you’ve cleaned! Furthermore, you’ll be really surprised at how dirty these indoor light fixtures can get in the course of 6 months to a year.

WIN Sports Detergent, Specially Designed for Synthetic Active Wear

WIN Sports Detergent, Specially Designed for Synthetic Active Wear

WIN Sports Detergent, Specially Designed for Synthetic Active WearWhen our beautiful dog Maverick came to our home from the shelter, he brought three things with him: His name, his collar, and a black fleece blanket with pink and white hearts on it, which is appropriate because he’s an older dog with heart problems. He loves his blanket and spends a lot of time on it, moving it around, and always keeping it nearby. As you can imagine, his special blanket gets stinky.

WIN Sports Detergent to the rescue! This laundry detergent is specifically formulated for synthetic fabrics, particularly for removing trapped oils from sweaty active wear. Although I don’t go to the gym, WIN Sports Detergent has been getting a workout in my house nonetheless, and even Maverick’s beloved hearts blanket now smells fresh and clean.

WIN Sports Detergent, Specially Designed for Synthetic Active Wear

The WIN website has an extensive (and actually pretty interesting) explanation of the chemistry that makes synthetics susceptible to odor and bacteria retention and the resulting negative effect on the fabric’s wicking properties and longevity. The Ohio-based company first introduced its product in 2005 as the first laundry detergent of its kind, and the fact that it’s still going strong is testament that it works.

There are two formulations of WIN Sports Detergent: Original WIN Blue with a light fresh scent, and dye- and fragrance-free WIN Green. For my review, I chose WIN Green, since fragranced products can aggravate my asthma. I’ve used it to wash nearly every type of laundry we generate—dark and light clothes, blankets, coats, towels, sheets, etc.—and everything came out looking, feeling, and smelling nice and clean.

The only thing I didn’t like about WIN is the cap. The bottle has two caps, a screw-on cap and an outer measuring cap. The problem is that after use, the measuring cap must be stored upright or rinsed and dried to avoid dripping detergent everywhere (unlike the caps on most other detergent bottles, designed to drain any product back into the bottle). It’s a small gripe, but not enough of a pain to prevent me from using it.

WIN Sports Detergent is available at select sports stores and at Amazon.com. It comes in a 32-ounce bottle or in money-saving 2-packs and 4-packs, eligible for Amazon’s Subscribe & Save program. There’s even a 1.5-ounce single-use bottle, handy if you’re traveling somewhere you’ll need to do laundry. Visit WIN’s website and Facebook page for more information.

If your New Year’s resolution is to exercise more, you might also want to make a resolution to keep your workout apparel in top shape with WIN Sports Detergent. Although an exercise regimen isn’t one of my personal goals, I’ll be relying on WIN in the summer months, because even doing yardwork here in the South brings on the sweat. And of course, WIN will be keeping my sweet Maverick’s blanket smelling fresh and clean.
