When your expecting a baby or the mother to a newborn, you’ll receive all kinds of advice from other parents. Some of the advice you’ll receive will work for you and other’s will not. Every baby is different and so are parenting styles.

My 30 year old daughter had her second child a few months ago and immediately came to me for advice. Baby Jax was having some issues, so who better to come to for advice than your own mother, the baby’s grandmother? Here’s some of the advice that I passed onto her.

1. All babies are different. Some will get up during the night every other hour and other’s will sleep 2-3 hours at a time. Some babies will take long naps during the day, other’s won’t.

2. It’s normal for a baby to spit-up and be fussy at times. As long as they don’t have a fever, crying in pain and are feeding well, you shouldn’t be too concerned.

3. Don’t switch from breastfeeding to bottle feeding or switch around your baby’s formula until you consult a doctor, midwife or baby nurse. If there is a problem, let them diagnose it and advise you on what to do.

4. Don’t buy over-the-counter medication and give it to your baby without consulting a doctor. Almost all newborn medications are given according to your child’s weight and diagnosis. Just because one mother gives a child XYZ, doesn’t mean you should do it too.

5. When the baby is sleeping, you should sleep or at the very least…lay down and rest. Try to save the housework and chores for when baby is awake. There is nothing wrong with mom napping during the day too!
