I’ve been pretty lucky so far with potty training my now adult daughter and my 7 1/2 year old granddaughter. Both of them were fully trained to use the potty by 24 to 25 months of age. I credit the early learning to the fact that we started very early and were consistent in our teaching methods.

Now that I’m a grandmother to a little boy, I’m responsible for helping to potty train him too, since I babysit him 2-3 days every week. Today, I’m going to share with all of you some valuable underwear training & potty training tips for parents to use.

Underwear Training Tips from Dr. Tanya Altmann:

Dr. Tanya is a UCLA-trained pediatrician and mom of three. She is a best-selling author, network television parenting expert, and entertainment industry. After 14 years in a busy group pediatric practice, Dr. Tanya founded Calabasas Pediatrics, a concierge practice providing personalized pediatric health care with an emphasis on nutrition, a healthy lifestyle and preventive medicine.

Tip 1 – Excite with Underwear: Get your child excited about wearing underwear. The journey to underwear training is two-fold: 1) getting your child to use the potty and 2) getting them used to no longer wearing diapers. Because of this new journey, I like to call “potty training” – underwear training.

Tip 2 – Patience is Key: Children learn to use the potty at different ages. Typically, a child is ready between the ages of 2 and 3 years of age. If your child is not ready, don’t rush them!

Tip 3 – Look for Signs: You will typically start to notice cues that your child is ready for underwear training. Some of these signs include signaling to you before they go in their diaper, interest in what goes on in the bathroom and/or the desire to start using the potty.

Tip 4 – Know the Underwear ABCs: With underwear training, children need to be able to know a few things like: A). when they need to go, B). how to get to the bathroom, and C). how to get themselves onto the potty.

Tip 5 – Encourage Use of Training Pants: Training pants are a fantastic way to ease into the underwear training process and the best next step after diapers in order to get children used to the feeling of underwear. A child shouldn’t go from diaper to regular underwear without using training pants in between.

Tip 6 – Lead by Example: As a parent, you are the best role model for your child and the best example to show them how to go. Let children come into the bathroom with you at a young age to watch how it’s done. In addition, you’ll want to teach them to wash their hands every time before leaving the bathroom. Children learn by watching those around them.

Tip 7 – All Children Have Accidents: Here’s a personal tip from me. All children will have accidents during potty training and sometimes for a few years afterwards. This is totally normal and a child should not be punished or disciplined for having potty training accidents.

Stephen Joseph Mermaid Beach Tote for Girls

For review, we received a complimentary Mermaid Beach Tote that comes complete with a sand shovel, rake and three sand mold toys. Not into mermaids? Don’t worry, they have several other designs for both boys and little girls. You can buy these totes plain or pay an extra $10.00 to have them personalized with a child’s name.

The beach tote measures approximately 15″ x 13″ not including handle. It’s a really nice size and will hold the beach toys, towels, water bottle, sunscreen and other things your child will need for a day at the beach (or pool).

Mermaid Beach Bag for Girls by Stephen Joseph

The front of the bag has an adorable mermaid design on it and the back of the bag is done in a see-thru mesh. This mesh allows you to easily see the contents in the bag and allows for sand and water to run out. If the bag gets sandy or dirty…spray it out with a garden hose or toss in the washing machine on the gentle cycle to clean it.

I think this beach bag is absolutely adorable! Heck, I wouldn’t mind sporting it around myself, it’s way too cute!
