Laws of Migration – A Novel by Author J. Suzanne Frank

Laws of Migration - A Novel by Author J. Suzanne FrankI love to read and have been reading books since I was a little girl. When I was younger, I used to read all kinds of books like the Nancy Drew Mysteries, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, etc. Even though my taste in books has changed as I have gotten older, I still love to sink my teeth into a good book!

Today’s book review is on a book titled “Laws of Migration” ~ A Novel by author J. Suzanne Frank who is also the author of the popular Chloe and Cheftu time travel series & the Dallas O’Connor mysteries.

Book Synopsis: Birds, especially the ibis, have always fascinated Elize — that’s why she became an ornithologist. But when her boss at the private Texas coastal institute where she’s spent her career gives away her expected promotion, Elize flees to Morocco to lick her wounds and write a research paper that will prove her worth and secure her professional future.

Morocco, with its impressive migration season, exotic flavors, and unwritten rules, is altogether foreign, even if many of the birds are familiar. After a brush with danger, Elize finds herself in Marrakesh, dependent on Erik, a sexy, mysterious stranger who makes her feel alive while opening her eyes to a new, intriguing world. After encountering her ornithology colleagues, who remind Elize of every bad professional choice and missed opportunity, she vows to find the Northern Bald Ibis — an endangered bird few have seen — and impress everyone.

She and Erik journey from coastal paradise to remote desert mountains in search of the birds. Through misadventure, Elize is forced to trust an unknown culture, and through tragedy she realizes that love and forgiveness are attainable. But first she must surrender her past and its pain to embrace her future and fly free.

My Thoughts: I love books that have story lines that include a little romance, some mystery, danger thrown in and some hidden secrets…this book has got it all! On top of that, I love birding as a hobby, so to have that tied into it all…well, it was the perfect book for me!

I think at one point or another…we have all been disappointed that we didn’t get a job or promotion that we felt we deserved. I can totally related to that and I love how that started off this intriguing story. Once Elize arrived in Morocco and started a new journey…I was pretty happy to learn about some of the Moroccan culture and how it was sprinkled into the book. Facinating to say the least.

Now this Erik character that she gets involved with sounds like my kind of man, well…sort of! LOL I can just imagine how hot looking this guy is, by just reading the words written within the pages of this book! He really comes to life by the author’s written words.

The book is basically about Elize’s journey to find herself and how she does that, with the help of Erik beside her. It ends so beautifully and I really hope the author considers a second book on Erik and Elize’s relationship…I bet it’s a good one!

If you are looking for a great read this spring and summer, pick up this new book by author J. Suzanne Frank…it’s a great read!

The Very First Bite by Cynthia Langston

Last year, I was introduced to author Cynthia Langston and her very first book Bicoastal Babe which was a fun read that I enjoyed very much. The Very First Bite by Cynthia Langston
Cynthia’s hilarious new novel centers on Lanie Albers, a thirty-something that has struggled with her weight most of her life. She eats as a therapeutic measure, and suddenly decides that a mad diet is the key to happiness as she prepares for her high school reunion.

The Very First Bite is a relatable account of the yo-yo cycle many of us have been on. The journey is difficult for Lanie but, in the end, she realizes that she must deal with the negative influences in her life, and that her self-worth is not tied up in a figure on a scale.

My Thoughts:
This book talks a lot about food and dieting, a subject I know quite a lot about -LOL. The star of the book, Lanie, has a class reunion that is 10 weeks away and she is being encouraged to go by her friend. Yet she has gained 20 pounds and she has to get that off. So we are taken through all of her trials and tribulations of a classic yo-yo dieter. Much of the time I was hungry reading all of the issues about food, but I could so relate to every diet trick in the book that she tried.

Lanie is also dealing with guy issues. Her on again off again romance with her non committal boyfriend make me want to smack them both. At 30, something you really think she would have learned how not to get sucked in by guy that use you by now, but you continue through the book to hope that he really does the right thing.

Plus she is still pining for her old high school flame that she had a lovely moment with at her last reunion that she attended. Is he going to be there this year too? Is he married still or separated? Lanie does everything she can to find out. Oh and what is she going to wear. Nothing fits right with this dang extra weight. Yoga? No way. Gym… hot trainer..

Oh Lanie is also really missing her BFF that up and walked out on their friendship with no warning. They had be tight since grade school and she keeps seeing her around town… or is she? Is Candace going to be at the reunion too?

This book had me frustrated at times and laughing at times. You follow Lanie through her emotional roller coaster of her life but in the end you are still smiling! I really enjoyed this book overall. The beginning was a bit of a frustration to me with all of the dieting issues, but it picked up quickly. I enjoyed her relationships for the most part and really enjoyed reading this chick lit book. It is light, easy reading for any time.
