If you want to free yourself from clutter, you may be interested in a new book called 10-Minute Declutter: Hundreds of Tips to Organize Every Room of Your House by Skye Alexander (Fair Winds Press/Quarto Group, September 2019). This decluttering book takes an unusual approach, based on the principles of the ancient Chinese art of feng shui.

To guide people unfamiliar with feng shui to use it to improve their surroundings and thus their lives, 10-Minute Declutter is divided into two main sections:
• Part One: Understanding Feng Shui in Your Life
• Part Two: Tips for Organizing Your House
Part One explains the basics of feng shui and how employing it in your home can affect your well-being. Alexander states that “…your home is a symbol of you—the outer representation of your inner state.” She goes on to say that “By clearing away the physical clutter around you, you can actually clear up disorder and difficulties in your life—sometimes overnight!” Her premise is that by mindfully using feng shui to declutter your surroundings, you will also declutter your emotional life and clear obstacles that prevent you from moving forward.
Understanding this link between the physical and the metaphysical is key to the decluttering tips in 10-Minute Declutter. Alexander defines clutter and its significance this way: “Clutter refers to an accumulation of too much stuff, without proper organization or distinction. Clutter usually signifies confusion, lack of focus, chaos, instability, or muddled circumstances.”
The main part of the book is a series of short tips and ideas to work through and eliminate physical and emotional clutter. The chapters in Part Two will guide you through decluttering your home, your workplace, and your personal life, as well as clutter control outside the home and for kids. Although some of the tips are activities that can indeed be done in ten minutes (e.g., discard old keys), some are useful but seem unrelated to clutter (e.g., hang a wind chime), and many are long-term strategies for following feng shui principles (e.g., eliminate sharp angles in your workplace or garden).
This book is part of a series of “10-minute” books from Fair Winds Press (an imprint of the Quarto Group). In my honest opinion, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! gets better and better with each release they do. My family absolutely LOVES all of the Ripley’s books, especially my step-son. He can entertain himself for hours flipping through the pages. I really like when he talks about one of the stories he read during dinner. It’s a book for everyone to enjoy, children and adults. It’s the type of book that never stays on the shelves in your school or local library.
I cannot wait to show my step-son Ripley’s new title. These books are one of his absolute favorites. Every time he gets a new title to add to his home library, he ends up carrying it around with him for a couple months.
I really like the Ripley’s books too. They’ve been around way before I was a little girl. I remember having to wait months in order to check out one of their titles from the library, both school library and public library. I never had the opportunity to own my very own copy, so I relied on the libraries. Ripley’s Believe It or Not 100 Best BIONS delivers the way you expect any Ripley’s book to deliver. As with all others, it’s broken into chapters: Classics, People, Animals, World, and Exhibits.
What I like the most about this title is that these are all stories that have been published before. They are the best 100 stories. Many of them I remember such as the Lizard Man, the Indian policeman with the extremely long beard and Mary the Asian Elephant…but there were many that I never had the pleasure of reading before this book such as the Phuket Vegetarian Festival, Liu Ch’ung who was born with double pupils in each eye, and Elmer McCurdy how is known for the phrase “You’ll never take me alive”. I really enjoyed reading through this book and I know you will too.
