Overruled by Emma Chase Book Review

SynopsisA Washington, DC, defense attorney, Stanton Shaw keeps his head cool, his questions sharp, and his arguments irrefutable. They don’t call him the Jury Charmer for nothing—with his southern drawl, disarming smile, and captivating green eyes, he’s a hard man to say no to. Men want to be him, and women want to be thoroughly cross examined by him.

Stanton’s a man with a plan. And for a while, life was going according to that plan.

Until the day he receives an invitation to the wedding of his high school sweetheart, the mother of his beloved ten-year-old daughter. Jenny is getting married—to someone who isn’t him.

That’s definitely not part of the plan.

Sofia Santos is a city-raised, no-nonsense litigator who plans to become the most revered criminal defense attorney in the country. She doesn’t have time for relationships or distractions.

But when Stanton, her “friend with mind-blowing benefits,” begs her for help, she finds herself out of her element, out of her depth, and obviously out of her mind. Because she agrees to go with him to The-Middle-Of-Nowhere, Mississippi, to do all she can to help Stanton win back the woman he loves. Her head tells her she’s crazy…and her heart says something else entirely.

What happens when you mix a one-stop-light town, two professional arguers, a homecoming queen, four big brothers, some Jimmy Dean sausage, and a gun-toting Nana?

The Bourbon flows, passions rise, and even the best-laid plans get overruled by the desires of the heart.

My thoughtsThere is just something about a southern drawl. Sweet and slow, it can make your blood boil. Being a short term southern gal myself, I know what those boys can do. So when I learned that the main character in this new release is a southern boy and he is from the mind of Emma Chase, I was already thinking I am going to like him a lot!

……And I was not wrong.

The author has a way of creating beautiful people that you really want to know and spend time with personally. Unfortunately for us, they are only in our minds through her books, but that is one reason I love reading her novels so much.

This is a pretty fast read. The story line is simple, full of friends and family members that make you laugh and really enjoy the experience of this book. There are plenty of steamy scenes, but the book is mainly about the relationship between Stanton, his intended, and his friend with benefits. It is a wacky relationship that will leave you shaking your head in many places, but being that it is mainly from Stantons point of view… why should we be surprised?

Emma Chase really has a way with words and I love her writing style. Plus the ending is right on the money! Easy and carefree with plenty of humor too, I enjoyed this book greatly and am looking forward to many more from her in this series. Winner!!

Troika by Adam Pelzman Book Review

I enjoying reading first time novelists. One of the main reasons is I love to look for what the publisher saw in the author or story to want to publish it. The depth of many first time authors is amazing to me. I think it is like an actor who has been working hard for 10 years and hits it big “overnight”. We often don’t see what is going on behind the scenes. That is much like the story in this book I received for review. Something interesting is going on behind what you think the story will really be.

A young Cuban woman passes her nights dancing in a seedy Florida strip club; a Russian orphan loses everything, then builds a new and prosperous life for himself in New York; a woman struggles to maintain her dignity and hope after a life-changing accident—these are the three members of the troika whose story is told in this dazzling literary debut.
Their lives unexpectedly intertwined, Perla, Julian and Sophie discover a world—a way of life—that forces them to challenge their definitions of commitment, love and trust, a world that heals old wounds and inspires them to transform tragedy into beauty.

My Thoughts: One thing about reading a new author is you really never know what to expect. You don’t know their writing style or where they are going to take you on your reading journey.

This book, I had a hard time classifying. It is someone what of a romance, but more within the women’s fiction and even edging into the contemporary chick lit category. That is different to say for a male author. The storyline is very unique and the author’s writing style is very different. Written in the first person for each of the characters, it is more like they are telling you a story – a narrative of the book. There are no quotations as someone is speaking which is a bit difficult to get used to at first, but soon it just flows.

What I enjoyed about this book is that you really are not sure where the story is leading you. You know there is something hidden, something in the background that you do don’t know. But when you do find out, it is not really what you expect. And the ending… what can I say about that other than I hated it! I wanted more!! I wanted to know where the story will lead.

The author has crafted strong characters that have vibrancy and depth of emotion. I liked them and enjoyed this book greatly. The story is interesting, intriguing and just a bit un-ordinary, even unorthodox, for some. But then, I happen to like that in a novel.

Bedside Manners by Phoebe Fox Book Review

We have all been there. Broken relationships that try to break us. Frustration, self doubt, anger, and so many more emotions that we have to deal with. Yuck! At least we can bury our nose in a book and relax! Plus, if the book is
