Scarecrow and Dracula Hand Painted Seashell Designs for Halloween

Scarecrow and Dracula Hand Painted Seashell Designs for Halloween

Scarecrow and Dracula Hand Painted Seashell Designs for HalloweenWe just started our Fall and Halloween decorating. Time to get out all of your spooky looking ghosts, vampires, frankenstines, black spiders, skeletons, etc. Oh…what a fun time of the year to be decorating!

Last weekend I sat down and painted 3 clam shells and 1 razor clam shell in cute Halloween designs. There’s a scarecrow, 2 draculas and a black spider design. All are EASY to do and don’t require you to be a professional artist. A great beginner’s project. If you don’t have access to seashells, you can paint the designs on smooth river rocks or other surfaces. If you really want to save time…just base coat the large clam shells and apply adhesive-back stickers onto the front!

Dracula – Painted with 2 coats of gray acrylic craft paint. Once dry, add the black hair, then the white for the eyes, red for the mouth and the black nose. After the paint has dried go back to add the inner eyes and the white fangs.

Dracula #2 – Base coat the clam shell with 2 coats of lime green acrylic craft paint. After it’s dry apply a Dracula sticker. Use a black paint pen to write the words Happy Halloween.

Happy Halloween – Base coat the razor clam shell with 2 coats of lime green acrylic craft paint. Once dry…apply a black spider sticker and then use a black acrylic paint pen to write the words Happy Halloween. To accent it a little more, use an orange paint pen to add a polka dot border.

Scarecrow – Base coat the entire shell with 2 coats of a tan color acrylic craft paint. Use a dark brown and medium brown to make the hat. Use yellow paint to make the “straw” type of hair. The facial features are simple shapes – 2 ovals for the eyes, a circle for the nose and then add the mouth. I used a black acrylic paint pen to outline the hat, hair, eyes, nose and to add the stitching down the center of the face.

Take all of the painted seashells outside and spray them with 1-2 coats of a Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer. Make sure you spray both sides of the shell. This protects the painted finish and helps to preserve the seashell.

Beach Swimming Suit Hand Painted Seashells

Beach Swimming Suit Hand Painted Seashells

Before we say an official goodbye to the summer season I wanted to post one more summer themed painted seashells design idea. This swimming suit aka bathing suit design is really easy to make. It’s the perfect little handmade decor piece when hosting a backyard pool party or to just decorate for the summertime season.

Hand Painted Beach Swimming Suit Seashells

You’ll need clam shells measuring 3″ to 4″ wide. Wash them in warmy soapy water, rinse clean. Then let dry for 1-2 days outside in the sunlight. You need to remove all of the sand, debris and fishy odors before painting on them.

Base coat each seashell with 2-3 coats of “flesh tone” acrylic craft paint. Allow for 30 minutes of drying time between each coat.

The swimming suit design is made by painting the upper half of a heart shape onto the bottom of the seashells. We used a dark navy blue and a dark red for our colors. Once you have the heart shape done you need to add the straps (as shown in the photograph). Let dry until the paint is no longer tacky.

Now the fun part. Decorating the bathing suit! We kept it simple with tiny polka dots on the red one and slash marks on the navy blue one. You can leave the straps plain or decorate those too. We did one of each. To add the decorations we used a white acrylic paint pens. It gives you better control and definition than using a paint brush. Let dry.

Take the seashells outside and spray both sides of the shell with a coat of clear acrylic spray sealer. This will protect the painted finish. You can display them inside or outside of the home. Adorable!!!
