Find Inspiration for Creativity and Joy with Happy: The Journal

Happy: The Journal, A Chance to Write Joy into Every Day and Let Go of Perfect by Fearne CottonThe start of a new year is the perfect time to begin a new undertaking such as keeping a journal. Sometimes all those blank pages can be intimidating, though, but that is not a problem with Happy: The Journal, A Chance to Write Joy into Every Day and Let Go of Perfect by Fearne Cotton (Dover Publications, December 2018). This beautiful journal has prompts, ideas, and inspiration for every day of the year, encouraging the flow of thought with positivity.

Happy: The Journal is actually a follow-up to the author’s book called Happy, in which she shares how she moved through a dark place to find happiness. In Happy: The Journal, she continues to share her own experiences as well as providing space and encouragement for you as you undertake your own journey to happiness.

Although Happy: The Journal is set up like a calendar that begins with January 1, there’s nothing to prevent you from starting on any day of the year. The pages are in pretty pastels, with each month in a different color. For example, July is a cheery yellow, April is a warm pink, and October is a soft green. Watercolor illustrations are sprinkled throughout the book, providing a nice foil for the prose and the blank space. All of this combines to make the book very visually appealing.

Each month begins with a section describing that month’s theme, and each day’s entry space is preceded by a short piece to bring focus or provide a jumping-off point. Each daily entry ends with an icon depicting a face with eyes but no mouth; the idea is that you can complete the face to illustrate how you’re feeling, such as drawing a smile or a frown, or whatever you’re moved to draw.

Cotton stresses that the journal is yours, to complete as you wish. In her introduction, she writes, “If you want to, you can use the pointers and inspiration to help you reflect on how you’re feeling and project you in the direction of clarity and happiness.” Happy: The Journal is a great vehicle to help get you moving in that direction.

Stay Warm with a Selk’bag Wearable Sleeping Bag

Stay Warm with a Selk’bag Wearable Sleeping Bag

Selk’bag Wearable Sleeping BagI have great memories from my younger days, backpacking in the mountains and enjoying views few others have seen. I also recall dreading that moment when I’d have to get out of my warm sleeping bag on a cold morning. Today’s backpacker doesn’t need to worry about that, with the introduction of the Selk’bag wearable sleeping bag!

Selk’bag Wearable Sleeping Bag

But the Selk’bag isn’t just for backpacking. Its wearable warmth is great during power outages, at sporting events, for sleepovers, to cuddle up on the couch, or when camping, RVing, or hunting. Imagine any time you need to stay warm but also need to be able to move around, and a Selk’bag might be the solution.

Selk’bag Wearable Sleeping Bag

Basically, a Selk’bag is a mummy-style sleeping bag, but with arms and legs to enable the wearer’s mobility. Brilliant! Selk’bags are available in various sizes and colors, but the two basic styles are the Lite, perfect for indoor use, and the Original, for more extreme temperatures. Beyond that, they have a Star Wars series that is a hoot—adult and child versions styled like Darth Vader, Storm Trooper, Chewbacca, and Rebel Pilot! On a more serious note, an option for hunters or wildlife photographers is a Selk’bag in Realtree Edge camouflage, available in two different styles.

Every Selk’bag has amazing features that enhance its wearability. Their hoods have drawstrings so you can tighten them as needed. The reinforced-nylon booties will keep your feet warm, and when you want to walk around, you just zip the booties off and put on your regular shoes or boots. To help keep your hands warm, there’s elastic at the wrists, with attached hand covers that are easy to pull on and off. The kangaroo-style pocket on the front of the Selk’bag acts as a handwarmer, too.

The Original Selk’bag has a few additional features that set it apart. Aside from its warmer temperature rating, it also has a cargo pocket (ideal for stashing a phone), side entry zippers that allow access to your pants pockets or fly, and leg vents to help with temperature regulation.

For my review, I received a Selk’bag Original 6G in the pretty Chili River red color. I use it mainly to warm up when I get a chill indoors, but I’ve also worn it when doing outdoor tasks on cold days. At first, I confess I felt a little self-conscious in my Selk’bag, but as I got more used to wearing it, I began to embrace its quirky look. I love how my Selk’bag takes me from chilly to toasty warm in minutes.

Check out Selk’bag for yourself at their website and Facebook page. Selk’bags are available for purchase directly from Selk’bag and from a variety of online and retail sellers, too; there’s a listing with links at their website.
