The Joy of Footed Pajamas

The images of footed pajamas are almost always accompanies by visions of jolly children preparing for bed or reading bedtime stories in front of the family fireplace. The one-piece fleece pajamas, also called blanket sleepers, were originally designed for helping children stay warm during cold weather. The snapped or zippered front made it much easier for them to take emergency trips to the bathroom in the middle of the night. They function much like the terrycloth onesies for infants.

Children are not the only ones who love this garment. For adult men, plaid or camouflage designs have a large appeal. Men who are sports fanatics can also enjoy footed pajamas made of jersey knit material. These are slightly reminiscent of long john thermal underwear worn in winter beneath clothing for layered warmth.

Women’s footed pajamas are usually distinguished from those designed for others by the designs and colors. Naturally, pink is a popular color, and pink plaid or pink camouflage are stylish choices. Earthy heart patterns and pastels have also been a common choice.

Alternate versions of footed pajamas may sometimes include hoods. These can be both functional and stylish. Many people simply let the hood hang or lie on it while sleeping. Others pull the hood over their heads to added warmth. Being covered this way in a fleece-like material from head to toe makes heavy blankets almost unnecessary.

Of course, the footed pajama is old hat for infants and toddlers. Because the material is so stretchable, made to give when the body moves or bends, it is the ideal casual wear for youth. They can enjoy recreational activities and follow their own curiosities without worrying about elastic, pant zippers or other clothing features that restrict movement. The footed pajama is ideal for parents of infants and toddlers, too. They do not have to worry about stripping off layers to change a diaper or prepare their young pajama wearer for a bath. It simply unsnaps or unzips, and the child is out of it.

Footed pajamas have even been the sleepwear of choice for some celebrities, including Samuel L. Jackson, Tina Yothers and Henry Winkler. This shows just how adaptable the garment can be for almost any lifestyle. It is a universal comfort and caters to the things in every life that are inescapably human.

I was so surprised when our 18 year-old granddaughter asked for “footies” for Christmas. And now I’ve even seen teenage girls wearing them to school – ! I must say, though, they are comfy.

I’m amazed at the popularity and variety of these. They really have become a trendy thing to wear for many. My daughter had one as a toddler, and I know my grandkids did too, but I recently noticed them becoming more and more available for adults and teens. Good way to stay warm I guess.
