This is a special week, as you all know. I grew up Lutheran and we call this Holy Week in preparation for Easter Sunday. Most evenings were spent in church from Wednesday on and special activities were planned for Sunday. Big family meals and fun for the children with egg hunts and plenty of food and friends around.
These days, with only 1 child and no family around us at all, it is a lot quieter at my home. I actually feel kind of bad for my son that he grew up without the big family gatherings and fun holiday preparation activities that I did. We do plan a nice family meal on Sunday after church and usually have other folks around the table that are “orphans” like we are, so it becomes a nice day. Sometimes we will travel to the Bay Area and spent it with my best friend.
This year, I have been so busy I have not had the time to plan what we are doing in just a few short day! ACK! I need to get on it. What does your family do during Easter week? Do you have special memories of fabulous activities with your family?
One of my mother’s favorite things to do was to have breakfast at a restaurant, and when I was a kid, we’d go to Mass then out for breakfast, and of course, mom would dress my sister and me in lovely new Easter outfits. Nowadays, though, my spouse and I don’t really celebrate Easter, although we do dye eggs on Easter morning. I have a turkey defrosting, but I’ll probably make it on Saturday, so we’ll be eating leftovers on Easter Sunday. And the Chinese Formula One Grand Prix is this weekend, so we’ll be watching the race, for sure!
Congrats to the winners! We’re an Irish Catholic family, but both my Mom and I married Greeks (her second marriage), so most years we celebrate Easter twice. This year we get it all rolled into one day so we have the Greek Easter bread as well as Irish soda bread and hot cross buns! One of our Easter Sunday meals will be taken with our Greek friends and their families in an outdoor lamb roast – over 30 people. Looks like the weather will be awesome so I cannot wait!
I have no idea what we are doing this Easter either. Is it just me or is time going in fast forward lately? I can’t believe it is already the middle of April this year. My favorite memories are of when I was a child. I remember one Easter going to this big house where they had a huge Easter egg hunt. I remember I was wearing my little Easter dress, gloves and a hat that was a fun day.
I just read on another blog Easter egg hunting ideas and there were some really neat ones like glow in the dark hunts, night time Easter egg hunts, treasure maps and mazes. It is amazing all of the great clever ideas people come up with these days. I hope you and your family have a very nice day and God Bless.
I grew up Lutheran too Chris and my family still goes to the same Lutheran church (in Ohio) I was baptized in. I love Easter and have so many great memories. Also I’m over the moon to win the fitness DVD! Just can’t wait to try it. Thank you so much!
Congratulations to the 2 winners.
We do not have any special activities. We go to the special church services. I make a special Easter dinner. We color eggs and when the children were young we had Easter egg hunts in the park near my aunt and uncle.
My family is Orthodox and Catholic (half and half). For us this last week is more about special beautiful church’s celebrations . For adults it’s the most strict fasting days before Easter’s feast. As for activities — we love to colour eggs (“pisanki”) and bake special once a year “cake”.
