It is hard to believe, but Spring is just around the corner and in 6 weeks, Spring will be here. For those of us who love to be outdoors and in our gardens, it is now time to think about planting all of those Spring flower bulbs!
Today, we wanted to share 5 important tips with all of you who are looking to plant bulbs this Spring and Summer gardening season.
1. Freshness Counts!
When it comes to purchasing the bulbs that you will need for your garden, look for ones that are fresh for this season. You don’t want to purchase last year’s merchandise! Inspect your package and make sure that your bulbs are in perfect condition with no mold, mildew or damage.
2. Location, Location, Location!
Read the planting instructions on the package! If they state they need to be planted in full sun, partial sun or in a shady area, that is where they need to go for the best results. In addition, they should never be planted in an area with standing water, you need a location where water drains quickly and easily.
3. Proper Position and Depth!
Read the instructions to find out how far down into the dirt they need to be planted and use a ruler if necessary to get it right. The pointy end of the bulb should be planted facing upwards, not downwards, so position counts!
4. Feeding and Fertilizer!
Do not feed your bulbs right after planting unless the package tells you to do so! Feeding or over-feeding newly planted bulbs can cause root damage. When purchasing feed and fertilizer for your garden, make sure you purchase the proper products that are made for flower bulb gardening. Not all products are created equal.
5. Get the Timing Right!
Some flowers need to be planted in early Fall for Spring blooming and some need to be planted in early Spring for Summer blooming. Read the package directions to know exactly when you should be planting your flowers.
By following these 5 important flower planting tips, you can have a beautiful blooming garden this Spring and Summer season.
