Let me introduce you to a brand new DVD release titled The Vietnam War: A Film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. Here’s some additional information about it.
Ken Burns and Lynn Novick’s ten-part, 18-hour documentary series, “THE VIETNAM WAR” tells the epic story of one of the most consequential, divisive, and controversial events in American history as it has never before been told on film. Visceral and immersive, the series explores the human dimensions of the war through the testimony of nearly 80 witnesses from all sides — Americans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, as well as combatants and civilians from North and South Vietnam.
The series includes rarely seen, digitally re-mastered archival footage from sources around the globe, photographs taken by some of the most celebrated photojournalists of the 20th Century, historic television broadcasts, evocative home movies, and secret audio recordings from inside the Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon administrations. “THE VIETNAM WAR” features more than 100 iconic musical recordings from greatest artists of the era, and haunting original music from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross as well as the Silk Road Ensemble featuring Yo-Yo Ma.
Our Thoughts: We received the DVD set two weeks ago and let me tell you, it’s fantastic! The set includes 10 DVDs and includes bonus content and the special feature: The Making of The Vietnam War. So far we’ve gotten through the first 4 discs in the set and have really learned a lot. This documentary series takes you right into the “heart” of the war and you’ll learn a lot. For example, I knew that Americans were not fond about entering the war and it divided our country at the time. However, I really didn’t understand how divided we were, until watching the DVDs.
One of the things that we find really impressive with the documentary is that you’re seeing BOTH sides of the war. You feel some of the soldiers pain and when they have triumphs, you feel that too. The re-mastered footage is absolutely amazing! You really get an insiders look into Vietnam and what was going on throughout the war. How it started, how it dragged on for years and how it finally concluded. You will get a good understanding of what was going on at the time. There were several parts during the first 4 DVDs that brought tears to my eyes.
Once we get back from vacation, we’re going to sit down and finish watching the other 6 DVDs. If you’re a vet and participated in the Vietnam War, you may have difficulty watching the documentary. However, I read some reviews online where vets posted and said that they actually got some healing from it. Just wanted to mention that before I finish up our review.
“THE VIETNAM WAR” is currently available on DVD and Blu-ray, has a run time of approximately 1080 minutes on 10 discs. There are 100+ minutes of extra bonus footage. The film is also available as a digital download.
