7 Frugal Health & Lifestyle Hacks That Will Save You Money Long-Term

September 8, 2026 by Sam H.

7 Frugal Health & Lifestyle Hacks That Will Save You Money Long-TermTrying to save money usually starts with the obvious things. Less takeaway. Fewer unnecessary shopping trips. Maybe cancelling a subscription that barely gets used. But there are other places where money quietly disappears. Health is one of them.

Not looking after yourself properly can get expensive. So can constantly buying things that could’ve been avoided with a little planning. A few simple habits can help with both.

1.     Don’t Keep Putting Off Preventative Care

There’s always a reason to skip an appointment. Work is busy. The appointment is inconvenient. Everything seems fine anyway. That last one is probably the biggest reason people put things off.

Routine check-ups and recommended screenings are there for a reason. Finding a problem early is generally easier than dealing with it after it has had time to get worse. The same applies to dental care. A little sensitivity or occasional discomfort can be easy to ignore, particularly when it’s not causing much trouble yet. But if pain becomes severe or a tooth is damaged unexpectedly, having the details of an emergency dentist Camberwell service on hand can be one less thing to worry about. That doesn’t mean every minor symptom needs an expensive appointment immediately. It does mean paying attention when something keeps coming back or starts changing.

2.     Cook a Little More Food Than You Need

Meal prep sounds like one of those things that requires colour-coded containers and half a Sunday spent in the kitchen. It really doesn’t. Just cook more. Making pasta? Make enough for tomorrow’s lunch. Cooking rice? Make extra and use it with something different the next day. A big pot of soup, chilli or lentils can cover several meals without much extra work. This can make a bigger difference to the food budget than trying to save a few pennies on individual grocery items. It also makes those “nothing in the house to eat” evenings less likely to end with an expensive takeaway order.

Basic foods are often enough. Rice, potatoes, beans, lentils, eggs, oats and seasonal vegetables can go a surprisingly long way.

3.     Exercise Without Paying for It

A gym membership is useful if the gym actually gets used. If it doesn’t, it’s just another monthly payment. Walking is free. Running is free. There are parks, stairs and plenty of space at home for basic exercises. Squats, lunges, push-ups and planks don’t require a machine or a fancy setup. Even a regular walk can be worthwhile. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends regular physical activity because of its benefits for overall health.

There’s also something nice about removing the cost barrier. No need to wait for the “right” time to start. Put on some comfortable shoes and go for a walk.

4.     Make Water the Default Drink

This sounds almost too boring to include. But look at how often drinks are bought during an average week. A coffee here. A fizzy drink with lunch. An energy drink during a busy afternoon. Another coffee on the way home. The individual purchases don’t look particularly expensive. Together, they can become a fairly large monthly expense.

Keeping a reusable bottle nearby makes water the easy option. Filtered water at home can also be useful where tap water isn’t good to consume. There’s a health benefit as well. Cutting back on sugary drinks means less sugar going into the diet and less frequent exposure of the teeth to sugar. Sometimes the cheapest choice really is the simplest one.

5.     Stop Treating Sleep Like Spare Time

Sleep is usually the first thing to get squeezed when there’s too much to do. One more episode. A bit more scrolling. Finishing something that could probably wait until tomorrow. Then the next morning starts with exhaustion. A consistent bedtime and wake-up time can help. So can keeping phones and other distractions away from the bed, particularly if they tend to turn “five minutes” into an hour.

Good sleep supports concentration, mood and general health. It can also make it easier to stick with other sensible habits. When people are exhausted, convenience tends to win. Takeaway instead of cooking. Another coffee instead of water. Skipping exercise because there’s no energy left. Getting enough sleep will not fix everything, but it can make the rest of the routine easier.

6.     Don’t Buy Five Products When One Will Do

Cleaning cupboards can get ridiculous. There’s a product for the kitchen. Another for the bathroom. Something else for glass. Something specifically for one particular type of surface. Some specialised products are useful. Plenty aren’t necessary for everyday cleaning.

For basic jobs, simple ingredients such as water, white vinegar or baking soda can be useful, depending on the surface and what needs cleaning. Reusable cloths are another easy way to cut down on disposable products. A little caution here, though. Natural cleaning ingredients aren’t automatically safe for every surface, and cleaning products should never be mixed without checking that the combination is safe. The point is simply to avoid buying something new every time a basic cleaning job comes up.

7.     Check What the Library Actually Offers

A library card can save more money than expected. Of course there are books. But many libraries now offer audiobooks, magazines, digital borrowing, children’s programmes, workshops and other community resources. That can be especially useful for families. So instead of buying another stack of books that may be read once, borrow them. Looking for something new to listen to? Check the library first.

Some libraries also provide access to online resources from home, so it’s worth checking the website rather than assuming the service is limited to physical books. Free is a pretty good price.

A Little Prevention Goes a Long Way

None of these habits is going to transform a household budget overnight. That’s not really the point. The useful savings tend to come from things that are repeated. Cooking at home instead of ordering food three times a week. Walking instead of paying for a gym membership that goes unused. Drinking water instead of buying another drink every afternoon.

Frugal living is really about being a little more deliberate. Not buying everything just because it’s convenient. Not ignoring things that need attention. And making use of what’s already available. Small decisions, repeated often enough, can make a noticeable difference.
