What Are the Top 10 Electrical Problems Affecting Australian Households

June 15, 2026 by Sam H. Leave a Comment

What might seem like a trivial electrical fault in your home could actually be something that is more than a bit annoying, such as flickering light, for instance, and could even be a precursor to something more serious developing, if you don’t get it looked at.

There’s a whole stack of electrical problems that are very common and impact lots of Australian homes at some point. By searching Strata electrician Sydney, for example, you will be able to find someone who can diagnose and fix an electrical issue quickly and professionally. But what sort of electrical problems are you likely to experience?

Here’s a rundown of some of the most typical electrical faults experienced by Australian households.

Is a flickering light bothering you?

The flickering could be telling you that your bulb needs replacing. That’s a simple fix you can do, but it’s also a fault that might be caused by loose or faulty wiring, and that’s a job that a qualified electrician needs to investigate.

No power from your outlet

If you’ve tried plugging in various gadgets and appliances into a socket ,and none of them work, it’s likely that you have a dead outlet. It might be that your circuit breaker has tripped and cut power to the outlet, but if that isn’t the reason, it’s time to call a professional.

Getting more than you bargained for when you touch a switch?

If you experience a slight tingling sensation when you touch a switch it is something you might dismiss as insignificant. However, you could be one step away from a proper shock as you might have a damaged outlet, or it could even be exposed wiring. Any sort of shock should be investigated as soon as possible by an electrician.

Do your circuit breakers keep tripping?

It’s frustrating when the power cuts out when you flick a switch or turn something on. If your circuit breaker keeps tripping, that is good for safety, but it could also be telling you there’s an electrical problem that needs investigating.

Look out for potential fire hazards

Overloaded extension cords or frayed wires are a recipe for disaster. You are risking the prospect of a fire if these are not fixed. It’s better to get an electrician to fit more outlets rather than relying on extension cords that may be under too much strain.

Power surges point to the need for protection

If your computer unexpectedly shuts down during a storm, the likely cause is a power surge. This scenario can cause damage to your electrics. A smart move would be to get your home assessed and arrange to fit a surge protector.

Do you hear a humming or buzzing noise?

If you hear either of these noises coming from an electrical source you should get an electrician to check for a fault. It could be a loose connection or some other fault that needs urgently fixing.

Poor lighting or slow appliances suggest a voltage drop

Voltage drops can be caused by faulty wiring or overloaded circuits. If you notice that appliances take longer to heat up, or your lighting is dimmer than expected, this could be the issue.

Any burning smell is an immediate red flag

As you would expect, if you detect the smell of burning plastic or rubber near an electrical source you should call an electrician immediately. There is a serious risk of fire when you detect the smell of burning.

Look for signs of moisture or water intrusion

It should go without saying that water and electricity should always be kept apart. If you find any signs that water is finding its way into electrical outlets or running down wiring, don’t delay, call an electrician to fix the problem.

If you spot any of these telltale signs it would be in your best interests to call an electrician so they can assess the situation and fix any problem. Any electrical problems should always be sorted as soon as possible, for the sake of your personal safety and in order to protect your home.
